Vent Blowing Hot Outside Air - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm having an interesting issue. So, it's a nice sunny 60 degrees today here in Cali, my windows are up because I'm driving at high speeds, and my car is warming up from the sun. I turn on the air to just blow in the outside air since it's feels so nice outside, and it's blowing hot air (maybe just warm air... around 80 degrees). The temperature is set to 60 degrees and to blow in outside air.

I messed with the temperature, and set it 90-degrees, heater kicks on like normal. Set the temp back to 60-degrees, click the A/C button and it blows cold air as expected.

How do I get it to blow in the cold outside air? Am I just doing something stupid here?

I've found that if the MO sits in the sun the dash and air vents warm up and can get hot. Until the dash area (interior) cools down you don't have much luck but to use the AC.

I've never noticed as much as the MO as compared with other cars I"ve owned but it is what it is.

Gone are the days when most cars had vents that were ducted directly to the exterior. If you wanted fresh air you would simply pull the knob, open the vent, and fresh air (and bits of leaves, bugs, etc.) would fill the cabin. The MO doesn't have that capability. (I wish it did, without the bugs.)

Hot water is always circulating through the heater core in the MO's HVAC box behind the dash. Even though the air-mix door can route the airflow around the core, the heater core will still radiate heat to the box. Your cool 60 degree Cali air will pick up some of that heat and be transformed into the warmer air you were experiencing. Eventually, as the box cooled, the exiting air temp would cool down and approach the ambient's 60 degree temp, but would never actually reach it.

You could always configure your MO like my 1970 MG Midget. It had an OEM multi-turn valve (similar to your garden faucet) under the hood that you had to manually open and close to control the flow of hot engine coolant to the heater core. It was cumbersome but worked perfectly (one of the few things that did on that car ;) ).
