I've been wondering why the murano oil filter is so damn small compared to my maxima filter. anybody know if there are bigger alternatives from nissan that can replace the small murano oem filter?
thanks |

Why? Do you not believe it is filtering effectively? Do you think Nissan would spec a filter that did not have adequate filtering capabilities?

From what I have read, the Nissan factory filter is very good, and even has an anti-drainback valve and metal endcap that your quickie lube filters do not have. If you think you need a better filter, you can always get a Mobil One filter.

i understand nissan factory filters are very good. i use them in my maxima, frontier and murano. but my question is, the nissan filter for the VQ30 is bigger than the filter for the VQ35 and thats the part i do not understand. if the thread pattern is same on both nissan filters (i'm not sure if it is or not), i wonder if i can use the bigger filter since it has more surface area.

Does it? Just because the can is larger that does not necessarily mean there is more filter medium in it.
Nissan could easily fit a larger filter on the MO if they thought it needed one. In fact it would be cheaper for Nissan to have a single filter for the entire VQ line, but for some reason they selected this particular filter for the MO. You would have to believe they know what they are doing.

Actually the story about the filter vs the VQ30 is true - the filter for the VQ30DE is larger than the one for the VQ35 - not sure why, and even in 2003 the VQ35 filter was "big" like the VQ30. But then I think both went to the smaller filter design, so thats I've used since without any issues.

I agree that they (Nissan) know what they are doing...using the smallest (and least costly) filter that will do the job. There are many filters out there that have more media, and superior media to the OE filter. Given the choice, I will use a larger, synthetic fiber media filter (and synthetic lubricant), and not agonize over changing my oil every 3000 miles (or every 7500 miles for that matter)!

It's now been a while since I've had my Max, and I've only changed oil in my Murano once, but I don't believe my Murano filter is any smaller than the one on my 00 Maxima.
