HELP! Took my 2003 murano into the dealer today - an odd sound begun yesterday. originally sounding like a possible hole in the exhaust system (which wouldnt have been a big deal - lots of pot holes in MA!) The service guy came out, told me i had a loose 'heat' shield, a banged up and loose cover for the radiator, need 4 new tires -$900, oh, and couldnt fix the rear door latch unless i paid him $200 more. I told him to fix whatever was making the racket and i would take care of the rest later.
He fixed the 'heat shield' and sent me on my way. The noise was the same driving out of their driveway as driving in - made it 1/2 mile down the street. Loud bang and grinding noise. Guy behind me came up and told me there was some kind of blowout and lots of liquid leaking from near rear tires. Turned around and drove back. The service guy came out, got in my car and drove 30 feet. Took it inside and put it up. Came in asking whether i had ever jacked it up incorrectly...then told me my rear differential was cooked. Where can i get a used one? He wants to charge $2300. for the part. How could he possibly have mistaken that noise for a loose shield. Any wisdom you experts can impart would be greatly appreciated! My extended warrenty expired last year and i was recently laid off from my job, so $ is tight. |

kathleen-
Welcome to the forum.
I am sorry to hear about your tale of woe.
My question to the dealer would be... "Did he jack up your car incorrectly??" I would ask why he even suggested it was jacked up incorrectly. What made him think that? Because if there is fresh evidence of exterior damage you could argue his equipment caused it. If you make a convincing enough argument he may eat part of the cost of repair.
I have been on this forum for three years and have heard of only one rear differential failing, and that was just a few weeks ago. That particular diff failed because the car was towed incorrectly.
The rear differential appears to be bullet-proof in normal use.

| There have been several diff failures reported on this forum - most famously probably 2 or 3 years ago there was a case where the rear transfer case exploded like in the case above (with pictures of the hole in the rear diff too). |
