Bogus memberships?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

It looks like we are being inundated with bogus memberships.

I noticed recently that there appeared to be an unusually large number of new members with questionable biographies, so I did an informal check. Over the last 3-1/2 days 100 new members signed-up to this forum. However, only 20 became actual members. The rest, over 20 a day, were bogus. Their biographies had links or references to porn sites, on-line casinos, weight-loss pills, drug info, or dating services.

So although the main page lists 11,759 members, the actual number is quite a bit lower.

That's a shame. I wonder why these morons waste their time posting false memberships.

Too bad our ADMIN is asleep at the wheel. I would think he would be more active in filtering out these loons.

Maybe it's required for them to harvest info. They may have dropped some bots here.

I can tell you really LOVE this forum! :D

I am sure these memberships are automated. It has been a while since I became a member but do we have that "picture of numbers or letter" thingy we have to replicate to sign up?

Why, do you think the NissanMurano.org tattoo was a bit too much? :2:

Homer is right - its bots that register for the forums, and this plagues just about every forum out there. I do not know if we are using an authentication code, but it appears not. Some sites use the "enter these letters and numbers thing" and others require confirmation to a specific email (although bots can do that too I would think).

I don't see these "not real" users as a major issue since they don't post much anyways.

Here's the key reason why I am making such a fuss over this issue. The latest goofball bogus-member is sosekemsTom. The homepage listed on his bio is: http://preteen-teen.com/pedo/acrobatic_nymphets.shtml Do we really want links like that embedded in this forum?

If the computer gurus out there tell me this is harmless and/or it is a common occurrence at other forums, then I will drop the issue.

There are approximately 300 members listed with a birthday of 03/28. Even more interesting is that over 90% are 25 years old. Bogus, all of them.

lol.... the data does seem overwhelming:

you can see the spreadsheet here

Thanks for the chart. It makes two facts very, very obvious. 1) We have a joker who is adding bogus members with the same birth date, and 2) you have even more time on your hands than I do. :D
