When it rains, it pours... - Click HERE for Original Thread

My brand new battery went dead all of a sudden. So I open the hood to take a look and I notice this "rain looking" fluid dripping on me, and then the hood drops on my head! The left hood lift is gone, $117 list. But it is best to replace in pairs....:3:

So I get a piece of wood to hold the hood up and I undo the bracket that holds the battery down, and one side drops down into the compartment under the battery tray...:3:

So I try to fish it out but I can't. I crawl under the car to get it that way but I don't see it. What I do see is that almost half the plastic clips that hold the plastic covers under the engine are missing and most covers are just hanging down....:3:

And then I notice what seems to be an oil residue of some sort around the steering rack, and over the engine sub frame. Panic sets in. Is it my rack? is it the tranny?...

So I get into the car and I am hot, so I roll all the windows down but the left rear window will not come up again. Turns out the main switch on the driver door is bad....:o

Then I remember I have the extended warranty so no worries....:)

But it is only Silver, not Gold. Will it be covered? I guess we shall find out.

Got a replacement battery from Costco but no time to go to the dealer yet. I am not looking forward to it....

When I changes my battery I droped one side as well, I don't understand why they are not clipped in, I know one side stays in alright but the other just hangs in. so then I looked around for about an hour couldn't find one, lucky for me Auto Zone has a OPPS section and they carry them!!!

This is probably not a good day for you to buy a lottery ticket.

It happened again!

Click...click...click... is all I heard this morning.

The first battery lasted two weeks, the second new battery 4 weeks.

Last night the battery was perfect, but dead this morning. I am thinking it had a heart attack....but it is just a battery....

One new battery going bad I can understand. After all, it is a cheap Costco battery. But two of them dropping dead? I am thinking something is wrong with the MO.

Also, when I was trying to start the MO, I turned the lights on (not while I was starting of course) but I could not turn them off! I had to disconnect the battery to turn the lights off...

Now the MO is under a trickle charger. The battery is holding the charge because I tested it by starting and it worked. I will keep charhing until it is fully charged and run it for a few days to see if it is the battery. But I am not holding my breath. I think it is the MO.

The biggest problem is how to get the dealer to fix it without them saying "cannot duplicate the problem"

Anyone else has had this problem? Two new batteries in one and half months?......:3: :3: :3:

Two bad batteries seems to be too much of a coincidence - might be worth getting the charging system checked out.

As for the hood guillotineing my head, that happened to me on my Maxima a bunch of times - those hood struts last 2 years, then and fail. So far my Murano hood struts are ok, but I would always prefer a metal prop rod over the struts.

That sounds familiar. Check out this thread:

No resolution yet, though.

Good luck with the dealer. They'll probably say "If there isn't a code stored, then there's no problem". Have I mentioned lately that I hate nissan customer dis-service?

I would take it to an independent shop and see if they have an idea.

It sure sounds the same. Except when I test started the car (after it had trickle charged for a while) I could turn the lights on and off with no problems. It would not however turn off when battery power was low.

I am going to put my jumper cables in the car and then use the MO for a few days to see if battery fully charges back up or not.

The first new battery's failure was very sudden. The MO started fine in the morning and I drove to Starbucks. A few minutes later I came back to the car and I could no longer start it! After I jumped the car and drove it for a few days, the battery would not fully charge anymore. It would hold just enough to start but you could tell it was not full. The second battery basically failed in the same way, except it was over night so I am not sure how sudden it actually died. If this one also fails to hold a full charge, then I guess I will replace it again.

I am not sure if I can really blame the charging system because if it was at fault, how come I was able to drive it for a month, always with lights on (DTRL or headlights) and battery charge was always perfect?

I think maybe there is a relay that sticks and drains the battery. But it must be a huge and sudden drain. The only non OEM thing in the MO that is always hooked up is the carputer but that thing does not use that much power when it is hibernating or in standby mode. Plus it cannot kill the battery that fast.

Anyhow, I am at a loss for now. I will report back in a little while if I find something. Meanwhile, please keep ideas coming.

It may not be an aftermarket component. Electronic failures are sometimes harder to troubleshoot than <insert "difficult" analogy here>.
And they can often be sporadic. But it really sounds like something is draining the battery or is not allowing the alternator to charge it. I know that alternators are good for mainaining a charge, but take a LONG time to charge a battery that gets the least bit low.

I have a hard time beliving that the charging system is at fault. The batteries, both of them, discharged very rapidly. The only way of course I could judge the first battery before it went bad was from the sound of MO starting and I did not hear anything that would make me think the battery was weak. Yet in just a few minutes it was totally discharged. I thought the battery cable had come loose, but that was not the case so I replaced the battery thinking the lead plates inside had collapsed. The second battery I have no clue but it was as strong as the day I bought it when I started the MO the night before.

i really wish i could help you Zeb, but this kind of thing you need to start pokeing around with a multimeter to see if there is a possible draw somewhere...really weird though!
Eric L.
Yeah I second the comment about measuring a current draw with the engine/all lights off. It should be below 100mA after the ECU goes to sleep (a short moment after you turn off the engine).
zebelkhan
Well, I charged the battery and drovethe MO today. The battery feels strong once again. I will do the multimeter test after I get home tonight and will post my findings.
