| I can only put the MO into "AWD Lock" when the speed is less than a few miles per hour. Once in lock mode I can drive at freeway speeds and it does not automatically cancel lock mode. Can anyone confirm this is normal behavior? The owner's manual is a little vague and I expected different behavior. |

If the behavior is like previous MO's, the AWD system is fully automatic even in Lock mode except for the following conditions - speed below either 18 or 9mph (depending on which year MO you have as they reprogrammed the controller).
Even if the Lock light is lit, the system is only truly in "locked" AWD mode at very low speeds - anything else above that is in full automatic mode where AWD will kick in if needed. The 09's have a better AWD system anyways and will likely not require AWD Lock unless you are completely stuck.
From my understanding, 2nd gen MO AWD's work like this:
a) from a stop, the system goes 50/50 during acceleration and goes to FWD only when up to cruising speed (or whenever you ease off the gas I guess)
b) when turning the system goes 70/30
The above info I gathered from the Rogue's AWD system which I think shares similar programming (i.e. "predictive AWD" vs "reactive")
On the 1st gen MOs, the front wheels have to slip before AWD kicks in. |

| I wonder if anyone can confirm this for the 09 MO? The manual says the Lock light will extinguish at high speeds but it does not. |

I was in AWD lock mode during a snowstorm the first week I had the 09. I recall the lock light turning itself off at some moderately high speed, maybe 45 mph? I wasn't paying close attention to notice exactly when, but I'm fairly sure it turned off by itself.
In the second moderate snowstorm I didn't bother with AWD lock. I had plenty of traction when needed, even going up a steep hill with about 5 inches of wet snow which is when I would expect differential lock to be most useful. |

Gord,
Thanks for the info. I think maybe the light always stays on but maybe not(?) |
