Another upgrade? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well, my MO is nearing 78k miles. I will probably get rid of it once it reaches near 100K miles for fear of the CVT breakdown. But I am not there yet so I figured why suffer?

So I decided to upgrade my carputer system by installing a 2008 Xenarc screen instead of the old Lilliput I had. The new screen is brighter and more sunlight readable, and has a feature that switches to Video input automatically when it detects a signal. So now, unlike before where I had to manually switch to rear camera, it does it for me automatically when I go to reverse.

But why stop there?

I also upgraded my GPS antenna to a newer one with SurfIII chipset and now I have better sat lock, even inside my garage!

Then my internet connection was crappy so I upgraded my WiFi antenna to a b/g which has greater range. Now I can surf the Internet on the move! Well, not really on the move, but if I stop long enough at a stop light. I also upgraded my carputer Front End skin to what they call Digital FX3.0 (http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/rr-...0-released.html). A bit of a tweak of the colors, and this thing looks so OEM!

Next weekend, I will finally have connectivity with my front camera, and then I will be able to record anything that happens in front of me!

Nice setup. I'm jealous that you've got yours so smooth. I'm waiting for the budget to open up so that I can pick up the TVandNav2Go.

What are you using for your front camera? Where'd you run the power/data cables?

Way to go, z-man!! :29:

My guess is that most people, including myself, would be envious of your"old" set-up. This new one sounds even more fantastic!!

z-man-

Ever since joining this forum I have enjoyed reading your list of mods. It is impressive to say the least. I am not even sure what some of the items are, :8: but I know they are impressive. :4:

However, ever since joining this forum I keep waiting for you to install the "Really loud Air Horns ". :D

Thanks everyone for your nice comments.

For the front camera I was going to use the one I got from GripperDon a long time ago but I think I will get a logitech webcam. The Front End I am using has a add-in that will let me add the speed, direction of travel, and date and time to the video feed so it can be recorded and used if needed. I was planning to install it behind the grill but logitech webcams are not water proof so it seems like the next logical place would be behind the rear view mirror.

I will post some pictures as soon as I get a chance.

Maybe we can do it while we sip a beer or two Mr. risaralda!

That would make so much more sense. I've gone through so many shoddy plans to get a camera to work from the exterior, nothing stuck. Behind the mirror is a much better plan: seal it in a box against the window with everything clean and clear... good to go. You might even be able to get a clean view from the bottom of the windshield, but the installation would have to be very clean to pass muster.

I love the idea of having the front camera recording in intervals with all the data displayed on the video.

I am still waiting for my webcams to arrive, but meanwhile, I don't recall if I ever posted pictures of my setup, so here they are....in multiple posts...(sorry...)

Z,

Looking good!!!!! I would love that setup in the Mo.

With all that weather and nav info in there, Im seriously thinking that you're planning on becoming one of those tornado chaser or something.

Nice setup Z!

Z-

I love that display. That is fantastic!!

However, there is no way I would want that stuff in my car. If I had all that info at my fingertips I would never leave the driveway!:2:

What's next?

There are many more screens and functionalities which I will post pictures of as I get them operational. To be very honest though, I find all of these "toys" very distracting while driving. So I usually try not to look at the screen unless I am stopped. But it is difficult!

Well, USB webcams are in. I bought two of them so that I would have a spare in case I destroy the first one. I pulled the guts of one camera out for custom installation. I will need to build a small box for it to mount behind the mirror. Unfortunately a touch of flu prevented me from working on this further. Hopefully I will get to it in the next few days.
