Service Life of Catalytic Converter - Click HERE for Original Thread
LKimura
It appears that I have an exhaust leak at the catalytic converter. Dealer states that the converter is $1200 - $1300 so I guess he implies that it should be replaced.

If I still have enough service life left on the converter, I would rather just fix the exhaust leak without replacing the converter.

What's entailed here? What's the service period of the converter?

thanks

That is way too high, even to replace the whole cat and everything.

I had damage in the joint between the front and rear tailpipe caused by a tow truck. Both pipes were damaged, and they wanted about $1500 to replace both since they couldn't get the flange to fit right. That was replacing BOTH of them.

Look at this thread for a link to one of our forum members that has an online parts store (decent prices):

This should give you an idea on what the whole part costs.

BUT, even better, you might want to take it to a muffler shop and have them check it out. I had a local shop here cut out my flange and weld in a new piece of pipe to fix my leak. Not only did it fix it, but he managed to fit my center muffler up tighter to the body so it doesn't hang down so low. All for $65 plus tax.

If you cat is still good, then find someone that will repair it without you having to buy the whole expensive OEM piece.

Note that not all repair shops will do this kind of work. The dealer, Greg's Japanese Auto, and Midas all refused to do this work on mine (and said I needed to buy new parts), I had to find a true muffler shop that does custom work.

Worst case, at least shop around different places. Dealer is going to charge quite a bit extra for this work, find a reputable shop. Or order the part online yourself and just pay them the labor to do the install.

How many miles are on your MO?? The reason I ask is because California law requires that car manufacturers guarantee the emission-related equipment for 7 years/70,000 miles.

Our MO is an '03 and it is coming up on 100K miles.

I'm torn as I learned that the tranny is also leaking from both left and right sides where the axle enter the tranny. Odd, but too many miles to fight this one.

Maybe it's time to think about a new car.

It is good that you noticed the leaking seals. In order to avoid a large (~$6,000) repair bill, I suggest you closely monitor the CVT fluid level. Although the CVT fluid is expensive, it is well worth the cost to avoid a catastrophic CVT failure. Make sure you buy the NS-2 CVT fluid from Nissan. No other place carries the fluid.

Any reputable muffler place should be able to weld the cat.

Good luck.

Thanks all for your help.

I will watch the CVT oil level. As far as the converter goes, I'll pursuit some options. I may take a look at it if I can find a way to jack up the MO to see what the "connection" looks like.
