Buying Used Murano CVT Leak?? - Click HERE for Original Thread
alexbeegle
Hi there, I am looking at a 2003 mo SE and after some looking through this site i decided to drive it home and check for CVT Fluid leaks.

I believe that there is evidence on the drivers side that there is in fact a small (hopefully) leak.

What are my options with this?
What kind of cost at the dealership if it is the seals as it seems to be most of the time??

What about gettting the dealership to throw in extended powertrain warranty?

Also what color should the CVT fluid be on the dip stick?
I checked the level, it seemed kind of low but it was hard to tell because the fluid was mostly clear..

The vehicle has 92000 miles on it so i guess it would be time for a flush and fill anyways..
Thanks in advance guys you all seem to be really helpful

Welcome to the forum.

That was a very good idea to check for CVT leaks. Have the dealer put the MO on a lift so you both can get a better look at the suspected leak.

If it turns out to be a leaking output shaft seal then I would walk away.

If it is not a leaking seal, then go for it.

There is no need to change the CVT fluid. Nissan has no set maintenance schedule for the fluid. It should be good for at least 200,000 miles. Plus, the NS-2 CVT fluid is very expensive.

Good luck.

I understand that a failed CVT would be a very expensive problem, but if the seals are bad, they cannot be fixed??

The results have been mixed.

Several members have recently reported that their new, dealer-installed seals began to leak soon after they were installed.

^^^^I'm a leak victim after replacement^^^^

Sad thing is that my friend says that the seals last about 20 to 30k before they start leaking again from his experience.

What will it take for Nissan to realize that this is a problem?

What irks me is not the leak itself but the dealers who know about it and still screw their customers (especially the ones that don't know about this). I've made it my mission to tell every Murano owner I encounter. So, far I've had several thank me afterwards...

Ok So I had the MO checked at 2 nissan dealers they both said in writing no cvt leaks or trans leaks whatsoever ( they said fluid was from sloppy oil change and leaking oil pan gasket)

So I am now a proud owner of a 2003 Murano SL FWD caffe latte leather inside midnight blue outside...

the best car i have ever driven, i hopefully will post pics and more info soon..

and i hope to be active here you guys seem cool.

Oh BTW the i had the dealer throw in a 2 year 24000 powertrain warranty covering seals and gaskets at no cost to me :)

not bad considering it has 92000 on it already..

see you later guys

I would never, ever buy a used Murano if there was a CVT fluid leak. Given the history of the CVT and its exchange cost (no repairs to date!) I would stay away from any used Murano if I had a slightest suspicions there was even an indication of a CVT troubles....

But is is your money.....you do what you want to do.....just make sure wallet giudes you, not heart and emotions...

It's a dealer, I'd have it looked at again by someone who is familiar with the leak...just in case.

Two dealers said it was OK in writting.. what more do you want? Welcome to the forrum you will enjoy the MO.

i take everything a dealer says with a grain of salt.

i purchased this vehicle at a independent used car lot but before i bought it i took it to 2 unassociated nissan dealers in town.

they both said no leaks on tranny whatsoever in writing.
that is the reason i purchased it, so far no regrets.

I just dropped mine off the tow truck in the dealers lot, not 1 hour ago.
I couldn't wait to get home and tell everyone what poor service Nissan has offered. I WILL NEVER EVER buy another Nissan.

The dealer was go enough to leave my wife and 3yr old broke down on the side of a very busy highway.

Pretty glad I was around.
Hope you have better luck.

Oops, I didn't see the "2 dealers"... anyhow, I've been happy with my M but it's frustrating when you see so many people with the leak and Nissan refuses to acknowledge it. Thank goodness for the cooperation of my dealer, they've been nothing but supportive of area Murano owners. The service manager who is a freind of mine tells me that they've been in contact with Nissan about the leak and they refuse to hear about the numbers that come in monthly.

Anyhow, good luck with the used M...
