Engine Clank HELP!! - Click HERE for Original Thread
2005mo
Hey everyone!

I just bought a used Murano 2005 SE for my wife a few months ago.

Great vehicle, she loves it.

I really need help because it seems that exhausted everything I can do through the dealership.

The engine has a clanking sound when accelerating. It sounds like a chain being clanked in the engine compartment.

It used to be very faint and every once in a while, now it's every time, and we can hear inside the cabin.

I've gone to 3 different Nissan dealerships. None of which could diagnose the problem.

One of them even said it was spark knock, and to change to premium gas, which we tried with failed results.

It's not spark knock. It seems something is loose in the engine compartment, although it doesn't affect the way the car drives.

I don't know what else to do.

Has anyone else had this problem.

My biggest fear is that with 44k miles on it, I will hit my powertrain warranty, and they say too bad.

Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My first guess would be a loose heat shield or perhaps a bad fuel damper.

There is no excuse for the dealers not adequately addressing the problem.

I suggest contacting Nissan Consumer Affairs and explaining the details.

I wonder if they would set up an appointment for a regional or corporate level tech to inspect the vehicle?

I am thinking a busted alternator bracket or tension pulley....

Good add Zeb!

My bets are on the pulley bracket or dampner.
That is of course if it is not preignition. (knock)

Thanks Zeb.

Is there a way for me to check this myself?

2005mo-

Can you reproduce the noise when the car is in Park? If so, then my money is on the fuel dampeners. The MO has two of them, one on each fuel rail.

To determine if the dampeners are causing the clanking sound you will need to touch each dampener and feel if the sound is coming from one of them.

If that is not the problem, and if you can get the clanking sound to occur with the tranny in Park, I suggest you invest in a mechanics stethoscope. It only costs a few bucks.

Good luck.

Yeah,

I checked it last night.

The biggest problem is that it will only do it while driving. I need to get it on a lift and run it.

I did call Nissan, and they said someone from the region should be calling me back by Monday.
