Hey all,
I have a 2007 SL w/out factory nav, and I've been looking for soultions to add Nav and have it appear as close to factory as possible. I just bought a Garmin GVN-53 unit on Ebay, which I think krush has. This is essentially a Garmin gps system that uses an external display and speakers (optional) for the interface. The unit comes with a remote to control it, but Garmin mentions something on their site aobut the ability to use a touchscreen with it. I'm sure it would require some serious programming/modding to get this to work, but I'm interested in trying to make it work so I can use the nav. system with a touchscreen instead of the remote. I just saw a couple of old threads (like this one) that mention a touch-screen overlay. I've never heard of this before, but I'm wondering if anybody here has tried to implement it with the OEM LCD display? It is a cheap solution, but the programming would probably be a bit tougher. Only other option I can see is to replace the factory LCD with an aftermarket touch-screen LCD. My concern here is of course losing the factory stereo/audio/trip/maintenance display. What I'm wondering is I know there are adapters to go from composite to RGB for a video input to the OEM display, but is there a way to display the factory 'stuff' on an aftermarket 7" LCD that would replace it and likely take a composite input? In other words, is there an adapter that goes opposite of the TVandNav2Go, etc?
Thanks in advance for any help! |

Hey
I too bought the GVN 53 and installed it, but I did much research on this to add the touch screen capibility part of the GVN 53 and Garmin told me that the manufacturer would have to come up with a interface for this to work. I checked into converting RGB to composite video and there is a device out there to do that but it costs around $480.00. (RAM Electronics makes the box) It is much more difficult to go the other way in the conversion. I did extensive research between Garmin and RAM + other people that are experts in the electronics field, and though it probably can be done, I decided to give up on it. Instead, I added OEM Navigation to my murano. (Read Posts under NAV). As some of the features of the Garmin unit are cool, I could not get use to the remote, and also the OEM Nav in the Murano has some REALLY neat features + the integration of it makes it even more cooler!

Yeah. I bought a touch screen overlay on Ebay to use with my carputer project.
similar to this I'll use the Tvandnav2go solution to put video onto my OEM screen.
I haven't installed yet, but I've got almost everything (except the tvandnav2go unit) working beautifully in my family room. Still a bit too nervous to go digging through the dash of my new MO.
The only hold back it sounds like you'd have is the interface between the touchscreen and the Garmin. Does the Garmin accept USB or serial signals for input? Or is it totally unique? |
