I was trying to avoid a pot hole and jammed my rim into a curb. When I looked it the rim is OK but banged/scrached up good. :3:
I am concerned where the rim's edge meets the tire. There are some rough areas and I think that the tire could rub it and get damaged.
Two questons, can I just sand/grind it down a little to smooth it?
The face of the rim has damage, should I sand and cover it with something like a clear coat of some type?
I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to confirm there isn't any other damage. I think I'm hearing some noises now especailly when turning. :(
I'm thinking about trying to purchase a single rim for replacement.
Thanks. |

| Yea I was looking. Just get nervous about any history of pot holes, accidents or something with used ones. |

You could sand the sharp edges and touch it up with paint. I would recommend bringing it to a Tire/Rim shop instead of the dealer for inspection. They will just try and sell you a new one.
To properly inspect it; the tire will have to be removed and the rim will have to be spun to see if it is straight and true and free of fractures.
I brought our previously owned Volvo S60's rim that was damaged from a pothole to Wheel Wizards locally and they were able to repair the rim. It was bent and out-of-round. They did an amazing job and could not tell after.
Is your spare a Full Sized one? If so; you can swap it out. If not; a new OEM on eBay would still be much cheaper than the ones from the dealer. Good luck with that and keep us posted. |

Dude! Gonzo, what's wrong? Your miracle battery dies AND you hit a curb all in one week? What's next, a loose engine from a low-flying jet falls on your car tomorrow? You'd better pay attention, someone's trying to tell you something... :D
I echo the above post, go to a rim or tire shop rather than the dealer. You've been here plenty long enough to know what to expect from the dealer.
My (very limited) understanding is that most Alloy wheels will NOT rust out or anything if the finish is damaged. My wife's 1998 Prizm has plenty of scratches and dings on the rims, and 10 years of rain and snow haven't caused any problems at all.
If you do choose to sand it down or whatever, you might need to consider getting it rebalanced. |

I was not as concerned about about the rim as I am about any wear bearing, suspension issues. If I had to guess, I will need new wear bearings... I'm going to try to get to the dealer tomorrow to check the suspensions and wheel bearings...
I'll keep you posted. |

Dealer tells me what I figured.... wheel bearings need to be replaced and I didn't think of that the tie rod is bent. I can see and more the wheel... there is a lot of play.
I will hold off an a rim as I think its mostly cosmetic. I did see many on ebay... one used one for $50. I might get that one as I will probably replace it when I install new tires this summer/fall.
I think I should have just taken the hit on the pot hole. :( |
