Locked Lug Nuts - Click HERE for Original Thread
parry
Hey folks,

I am in the process of getting my Tires changed soon. They are locked by the factory installed Lug Nuts. I can't seem to find the original Key they gave to me. What are my options here?

1. Someone said break it open and forget the locking lug nuts. Just get the normal nuts.

2. I would like to continue using the locking Lug nuts without breaking the current one or atleast be able to continue the locking style

Should I get the tires replaced by the dealer as they have a master key (asking $100) for mounting and balancing or go elsewhere and get the lock nut broken?

Is there any way to get the work done and save some $$ as well?

Valuable opinion/advise would be appreciated..

I never heard of a Murano with factory installed locking lugnuts.

(doesn't mean they don't exist though)

I dunno, mine came with it. It might have been a freebie by the Dealer or Nissan Canada thing..

If the dealer says they have the "master key" then that is really your only option without you key. The other way is using an air chisel to force the locks off. A new locking set from the dealer is only 30 bucks

Are most of the folks here using locking nuts? Is it worth it to spend that $30 on new one's?

I have the locking nuts that Nissan sells as an access. option. Not sure how many different patterns there are. I would take some paper and a pencil and color over the pattern on your wheel nut. Then I would bring it into the parts department and ask to purchase/see two sets of locking nuts. If either one matches than you just saved yourself about $70.

I had a similar problem on my old car. There is a tool that will remove the nuts - not sure if they are savagable after. In my case, the nuts were not recessed like the Murano. I would think chiseling the nut would damage the rim.

My MO also came with the dealer-installed locknut. I found the key in the storage pocket where the jack is stored. A buddy of mine who bought his car from the same dealer found the key in the glove box.

The key was in a blister pack that also contained the four original lugnuts.

Take a look in the spare tire well, glove box, and rear storage pockets. I am sure it is there.

I have a 2004 Murano. Since I was leasing the car at the time, I didn't seem to have an option about whether or not I wanted the locking lug nuts, mine came that way. Anyhow, the stealership left an extra kit of lugs in my glove compartment with one lug being the key.

I had a bad tire a few years later and went to a large retail tire chain to have it replaced. When I asked the service rep there if he needed the key to unlock the lugs, he said no. I told him I had my key avilable, but like I said, he didn't use it. Maybe you can check ahead before you take it in.

Good luck!

That's what mine look like, which is in the glovebox - in the same plastic - with my old unlocking lugs.

njjoe brought up a seemingly obvious but good point. Check everwhere in the Mo before you do anything else.

I know I have them somewhere but not in the car. I just can't seem to find them..

Well, if they're the same as what you have, that website sells the set for $35.00 plus shipping. Beats what the stealership wants.

Yeah, but what guarantee does he have that they will send him the right key to match his locks?

I heard that a Gator-Grip socket might be able to pull one of those locks off. My Police Brother in law said that they caught a few guys pulling rims off with wheel locks using that type of wrench

I got a gatorgrip for xmas, I'll check when I get home.

and

I would think that big 10 or NTB would have a key.

Not sure about it. All tire places, including the dealer always ask me for the key......

Anyway, he does not seem to have, or cannot find the key. Even if one of the place can unscrew the lock nut what next? Get a new one? Get rid of lock nuts? Are they really working? Not sure....

Didn't you read my reply before?
You quoted it well, but I did say:

I repeat, that's $35.00 plus shipping.

Parry;
My sugestion to you is to take your car into where you are looking to buy the tires from. I am certain that they run into this all the time and would gladly remove for you at no charge if you are purchasing the tires there.
My MO came with locks on also when I purchased it just as Joe said; in the trunk.
Anyhow; is it worth it? Only you can decide that but for the going rate of the cost of the locks; I think it is.
Good luck with that.:4:

I think it is very sensible advise. Pay $35 for lock nuts and go the the tire place when you are ready to get new tires....simple and inexpensive solution....
parry
Thanks for the awesome advise. I'll take that

Well? Don't keep us guessing. How did you remove the locks???

I went to the dealer. Purchased a new set for $34(incl taxes). Asked the dealership to replace them(for free ofcourse). Had to ask nicely.. ;)

Then I went to Costco and got the Oil changed($47) my Tires installed for $36(purchased 4 tires earlier via craigslist for $200..90% tread on them)

Then I went to the dealer recommended place for alignment ..spent another $92

In the end..almost spent like..$410
