it may be rail dust.... if your murano arrived to the dealer by train.... the rust from the tracks would fly onto your car....
you can fix this yourself with clay bar kits from your local autoparts store.... just wash your car first with soap and water.... then dry it... and then take a bit of the clay and then glide it around all the affected surfaces while lubricating it with the detailer spray that should be included with the kit.... the kit should cost around $20.... after that you can apply paint cleaner/polish/wax to protect the finish....
www.meguiarsonline.com great place to go for detailing questions..... |

It could also be caused by manufacturers. Do you happen to park your car sometimes in an industrial area(near work; home.....)? Sometimes metal dust from manufacturers that grind steel or finish metal-work can send fine steel dust particles up through their industrial exhaust systems.
The fine dust comes down and settles on everything around it as "dust". Then on really warm sunny days; it embeds itself into your top-coat where it stays then rusts.
Clay bars are the way to go as sugested for removal.
Parking in a shady spot(if possilbe) would be a preventative measure if the case is as suggested here..... |

The dealer is right...
My white MO get's me to the train to get to work every morning and is parked about 10 feet from the tracks the whole day. I had lot's of rail dust (little metal shavings from the tracks/rims that settle on the car and start rusting) on the car. Good clay-bar-ing and from that point on regular treatments with Klasse All-in-one have helped a great deal. If I go to long without treatment it's clay-bar again.... With patience you can do all of that yourself and save bundle (if you have the time to do it....)..... It's not a MO specific issue - but rather light colored cars that show this type of pollutant much more clearly... |

The rear hatch is not fabricated from sheet metal like the other body panels. The hatch is molded from plastic, so any rust is most definitely surface particles that have attached themselves to the finish.
Clay-barring should remove most, if not all, of the rust particles.
If you have ever waxed or polished your car, then you should have no problem clay-barring it. However, if you would prefer to have someone else do it I suggest you find a professional auto detailer in the yellow-pages. I would not let your dealer do it.

05 glacier pearl, same rust problem, have tried the clay bar, but not all of the rust could be removed, in addition the rust comes back, most of the rust is on the hatch. If you find a fix, please let me know.
Thx. |

use paint cleaner after claying.... something like meguiar's deep crystal cleaner or scratch X.... scratch X will take care of it for sure but deep crystal cleaner is easier to spread around.... |

Thank you ALL for your replies, comments and suggestions. I do live about 1000 feet from train tracks, but my car is garage kept at all times. My maxima doesn't have that problem even though for the first year it was outside b/c i didnt have garage room. Anyway, sounds like there is a solution.. the spots are REALLY small, but EVERYWHERE.. Clay barring did remove those when dealer demonstrated.. but i don't know if its just me, but for a $38k vehicle, should this problem NOT exist?? its the FIRST time I ever hear of such issues. I contacted Nissan North America w/ a complaint letter. We'll see what happens.
Thanks again for all your suggestions. |

Rail dust is a common problem that has been around for decades.
The microscopic ferrous particles are so light they are carried by air currents. Being so small they instantly begin to oxidize (rust) when exposed to moisture.
A good surface protectant (Zaino, etc.) can help by keeping the particles away from the paint. The particles will still rust, but they will be less damaging to the "paint".
What color is your Maxima? If it is a darker color, then maybe that explains why the spots are not visible.
Do an Internet search for "rail dust" and you will see that you are not alone.

I could see that the hatch would be worse... when you drive it all blows to the rear and its kicked/sucked up as you drive due to the low pressure in the back of the MO (or any car) which will hold it there.... same issue here with salt... the back of the MO is terrible with salt dust on the hatch.
One solution would would be a rear wing on top of the hatch to redirect some airflow down over it... but we all know how bad the MO looks with a rear spoiler/wing. |

| If you've got rust on the rear hatch then you have a different Murano than I do. As far as I know, and please correct me if I'm wrong, the rear hatch is made from some sort of plastic like the bumper panels. In this case I would agree with everyone else and the rust is environmental. |

If the car body paint is not regularly washed and waxed, all sorts of deposits can make their home on the clear coat finish and start to eat away at it.
The clay bar is a good idea, and I say 4-6 months is a MAXIMUM interval for waxing the car - its better to wax once a month to ensure you always a coat of wax on the car. Despite what they say about modern waxes, the wax doesn't last that long. I've had good success with Meguiars, Mothers, and Lexol wax products. |

I had the same problem with my Glacier Pearl White Murano. I used Zaino's clay bar and wax and got rid of each and every rust spot. It is a lot of work, but the result is amazing. I never thought the Murano can look like new again, I had rust spots all over.
Conclusion, clay bar works. |
