Acceleration with 2003 AWD SL after hi speed driving - Click HERE for Original Thread

Has anyone had this problem?? After freeway driving (75-80mph) for some time, when I take an exit ramp and come to a complete stop, the transmission does not immediately re-engage for about 15secs, making those 15secs seem like an eternity and praying that I do not get hit as a roll across the intersection (because the foot is on the accelerator and not the brake). I am taking the car into the dealer...any ideas?

That is not normal behavior. Has it always done this, or is this something that just started?

Welcome to the forum.

It is a shame that a problem, and not praise, brought you here.

After your freeway run, when the CVT is not responsive, what is happening with the engine? Is it responding to the throttle? Do you hear any unusual noises or feel any unusual vibrations? Any burning oil smells?

Without additional information it is difficult to diagnose.

My first thought would be high CVT fluid temp caused by low CVT fluid level. Take a look under the MO for signs of oil leakage, specifically when the front half-shafts connect to the tranny.

I don't think it is the transmission - this sounds like the classic sign of a throttle position sensor or electronic throttle body failure. A lot of people here have reported it (perhaps Homer most famously), and it is usually fixed by restarting the car. Yeah, its like a Windows machine. Hopefully the computer stored a code that can be read by your dealer.

From the posts I've read here over the past 5 years, the problems manifests like this:

1) Extended freeway driving, followed by
2) Coming to a complete stop (such as an exit ramp or toll plaza)
3) Step on gas, very sluggish or no response
4) Turn off car, restart
5) Everything seems normal again

Thanks all...no smell, no unusual sound. Just no response to the accelerator and then it kicks in...began happening around 45-50k....happens most on warm days (did not happen during the winter)...Turning off the engine does help....but I thought it might be cooling it down.

This exact thing happened to me when I first took a long trip with my 2003.
After getting off the freeway and stopping at a signal I hit the accelerator and nothing. The tach was moving but the car wasn't. This happened twice then as quickly it stopped doing it. I took it to the dealer in Santa Cruz, CA but of course could not duplicate nor was there a failure code. Cleared up itself.
