I have an 05 SL AWD. I hear higher pitched jingling -like rattles emanating from the undercarriage. Sounds like from the driver side between the wheels, but it could be from anywhere. Sounds like rattling metal chains. I only can hear it with the driver side window down and driving slowly over rough pavement or going over small road bumps. I looked under the vehicle but did see anything loose. Any ideas?
Perhaps suspension rubber bushings; loose hardware ??
Has anyone experienced and resolved this? |

TeddyS-
Two things come to mind - 1) Loose heat-shield on the cat, and 2) parking brake cable.

| I had a bad rattle too, and found that it was the trunk latch, one of the screws was stripped, the other, loose. was able to tighten one and the rattle stopped. |

| I'm with Joe on it being the heat sheild. My bracket for the sheild rusted away and made a "high-frequecy" pitched rattle. I used a S.S. band clamp to tighten it back up. |

| I had a similar noise. I had the catalytic convertor replaced (under warranty), and no longer have the noise. Sounded more like a heat shield problem (loose thin metal or aluminum). |

I've had this rattle sound since I bought the car in January 2004.
I took it to the dealership 3 times.....they always claim they can't hear it.
I even brought them the TSB for it. Apparently it is caused by the parking brake not being adjusted properly.
They performed the TSB and it was quieter for a couple of weeks....never went away completely. It's back now as loud as ever but for the most part I'm just used to it. |

| I had this noise too and could never trace it down. I added sound deadening to the car and while I was at it, I added a foam sheet insulator over the tools in the right, rear cubby hole and wrapped my trailer ball mount in another foam sheet and put that into the same cubby hole. Since then, no more metallic noises. |

Apply the parking a little, 1 click, while driving on bumpy road, my noise went away.If yours does
the p brake needs to be adjusted. |

Regarding the undercarraige rattle/jingling noises: I had the parking brake adjusted. That did not help. I checked the heat shields (about 4 separate sheetmetal covers under exhaust components) for loose screws or other parts coming in contact with them, and they were all fine. In fact, I inserted pieces of black foam insulation in the gaps between the car underside and the heat shields to dampen any shield vibration. This did not seem to help either. The shields are thin and can act like a drum when vibrating.
The noise is like "jingling keys" you can hear only with the windows down and driving slowly over rough pavement, and probably coming from the middle to back of car. Sounds like some small parts are loose underneath, but i could not see anything from crawling under there with a bright light. My guess it's near the rear suspension. I have heard this from other Muranos too, as they drive by. Anyone pinpointed this? Thanks. |
