Small tear in leather steering wheel cover - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have had my 09 Murano for a couple weeks. I noticed the other day a small tear in the leather steering wheel cover. It wasn't noticable until the sunlight hit the wheel one day. It doesn't seem to go all the way through the leather but seems to be more than a scratch. I don't really want to nit-pik but the Murano is new. I am just wondering with summer coming and the high temperatures that can occur in a car along with the sun beating down on the steering wheel that maybe over time this small tear will open up. I was going to notify the dealer immediately just to make sure that they don't think that this tear was created by me. I don't know whether this can be repaired without noticing the repair or the steering wheel needs replacement. Any suggestions?

I think it all depends on the depth of the scratch and the benevolence of your dealer.

Your dealer may take one look at the wheel and replace it, or he may claim it is normal wear-n-tear and send you packing.

Like I said, it all depends on your dealer.

I would take it to the dealer. What do you have to loose? Just say it was like that when you bought it. But as njjoe said that it all depends on the dealer. Mine would just say ok we will get you a new one! I know the manager so that is why. But you will never know until you try.

I had some scratches on the plastic dash near the ignition switch when I took delivery and mentioned it to them before I drove off the lot. They later called me and said their "leather and vinyl" guy visits on Wednesdays and to come by then.

I show up on Wednesday and sure enough there is a guy there working out his truck - he applies a paint like compound to the dash and it dries and hardens - you can hardly tell there was any imperfection. I suspect a similar service can be performed on the steering wheel cover as well. It won't be perfect but its will be better than a scratch and the dealer should be obligated to repair it as part of their predelivery inspection. I hope they don't accuse you of causing the tear!

I spoke with a service advisor yesterday. I am going to the dealer and have him look at the tear on Monday. I also told him that there was a scratch on the air bag cover in the center of the steering wheel that I noticed while I was driving home from picking up the car the first day. I didn't mentioned anything to them since it was small but now I think that they may be related. He said that they will take care of it. They will have to determine whether it will be a Nissan warranty repair or they will cover the cost. We will see when I visit them on Monday.

Well good! I hope they take care of you! Tell what you find out.

I went to my dealer last week and they said that they would replace the steering wheel. I was told today that it had arrived. I know that I may be overly concerned for probably no reason but I am now wondering whether I should have the dealer replace the wheel. I am sure they probably know what they are doing but am concerned whether they could create some other problem while replacing it. Before I went to them I called two local leather repair companies and described the very small tear and they said that they could fix it. I know that this would be on my dime but would just hate to find something else that was done to the car while in the process of replacing the wheel. I am sure all this is in my head but what would you do?

I would have the dealer complete the repair since you've already started the process.
