| Carman Murano |
I took the Murano to my local dealer yesterday to have my new Kumho tires roadforce balanced. I've been experiencing a steering wheel shimmy at speeds over 60 mph that would not go away. I assumed this was the problem. The car has 68K on it.
An hour after I left the car, I got a phone call from my service advisor saying that the technician found two broken engine mounts and that is what was causing the vibration. Luckily I have the Nissan extended warranty that covered the repair. Has anyone else had this problem? Never occurred to me???? |

Carman Murano-
Were they the standard or electric motor mounts?
The Mo has either one or two electric motor mounts that change stiffness depending on engine and vehicle speed. FWD models have one electric mount, while AWD models have two. I assume your MO is AWD. (If not then your dealer is screwing with you.) With the vehicle stationary and the engine at idle, the motor mounts are in the SOFT setting. Above 950 rpm with the vehicle in motion the mounts transition to the HARD setting.
There have been instances where a single mount has failed, however dual failures appear to be very rare. And even if both failed I am not sure if they would induce steering wheel shimmy. I may be wrong, but it seems a bit odd.

Our Murano is FWD, and I don't know why the dealer would screw with me as I did not have to pay for anything...it was covered by the extended warranty. All I know is that Carmen is driving as new again! Cost of the repair would have been $430. Ouch! |
