Cotton Candy Smell - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a 2007 Murano with 7400 miles.

Lately, after turning off the engine, I notice that there's a smell of cotton candy coming from the engine compartment. I don't smell anything at the tailpipe.

Any ideas what's causing that smell? Is that the standard antifreeze smell?

P.S. No, I haven't been anywhere near a carnival or a county fair. :D

Possible coolant leak, maybe burning off on the hot exhaust manifold or something of that nature

This is a common problem with the MO. The vent for the coolant expansion tank is at the plastic cap. When the radiator vents, some of the pressurized coolant will flash into steam as it is released into the tank. The coolant vapors (a.k.a. cotton candy smell) exit from under the cap and that is what you may be smelling.

It is nothing to worry about.

On the other hand, a coolant leak would be evident by the loss of fluid in the expansion tank. No coolant loss, no leak.

Thanks for the help, folks.

There doesn't appear to be a leak. The reservoir looks like it's at the proper level.

I'll check it again, but if I don't find any sign of a leak, I won't worry about it anymore.

The smell makes me hungry, through. :p

If a clown with a red nose and size 14 shoes comes out of there, don't be surprised. Last time I smelled cotton candy from my engine compartment, that clown and about 15 others came out from underneath the manifold somewhere. Cotton candy smell is much better than elephant do-doo anyday.

Just kidding of course.
Hope you get your problem resolved and posted here.
