will Krown rust control void warranty? - Click HERE for Original Thread
2007Murano
Hi,

The dealer who sold me my MO said that some aftermarket rust protection places (including Krown) may void my warranty since they use a petroleum based product.

Anyone know if this is true? I'm thinking he just wants to sell his stuff.

thanks

So no replies at all?? I'm surprised - i am not used to not using any kind of rust protection at all.

Does this mean nobody uses Krown on their Mo or just not Krown??

Are you referring to an undercoating or a paint protectant?

Just the undercoating - but to Krown, they call it rust protection where they spray inside the doors etc. as well as underneath.

It is my belief that most modern-day cars do not benefit from aftermarket undercoating. When was the last time you saw a Nissan with rusted-out floorboards? Modern metallurgy and chemistry has produced metals and finishes that are highly effective against rust and corrosion.

However, if you are looking to reduce the sound levels in your MO, then the undercoating and inner-door treatments may help a bit.

Wow - i must be 'old school' - i always worried about rust since i am so meticulous with the paint.

It's amazing how many new cars i still see though going in and out of a Krown dealer.

Do you think the rust treatment would hurt anything?
The dealer business manager was saying the petroleum based product could harm some components - i just dont see how.

I would think that you're dealer is simply trying to pressure you to buy HIS service. I can't think of how it would void your warranty or cause any problems.

BUT, I don't know for sure. I'm with njjoe, I don't really think it's needed, but if you really want to do it I would call Nissan Corporate and ask them.

How long do you plan on keeping your MO? If it is less than 5 years I would think there is no benefit gained from undercoating, because the corrosion warranty is good for 5 years (unlimited mileage).

However, if you feel more comfortable with having undercoating applied, I would think the guys at Krown would know if their pertroleum-based product is compatible with Nissan's.

Just remember, if there's one thing you can learn from this forum is that you should NEVER trust a Nissan dealer. Not the sales staff, not the service staff. They all suck

(except for one nice individual on this forum who happens to now work for Nissan service...;))

Petroleum based products sometimes have undesirable effects on rubber compounds.

This is only based on my experience with an Oil & Gas producing company. We've got a number of stock tanks which collect the condensed oil from our natural gas wells, and each tank has a hatch on top sealed by a rubber gasket to check levels. There is some kind of interaction with the condensate and the rubber seals as those seals break down and fail on a regular basis.

I'm not certain that this effect could be different for an automotive petroleum based product accidentally sprayed onto automotive rubber compounds (seals, etc.). The difference would be in the level of refining... our condensate is raw and has all sorts of junk still in there... the undercoating would hopefully have those harmful compounds removed to be less damaging to the synthetics on your car.

I think i may call both Krown and Nissan corporate to see what they say.

Also a good point brought up of how long i plan to keep it. Undecided at this point, but i wonder if the next potential buyer would like that fact that i've applied some rust inhibitor for his sake which could make the sale easier. Unless i trade it in where it probably wont matter.

As for Nissan dealerships - mine have been good do far other than the chip paint pen they sold me is darker than my color. They told me to bring it back - i'll see what they say.

Having lived where no road salt is used, and then returning to the inland salty sea that is Eastern and Southern Ontario in the winter, I can assure you that new cars do still rust. Out west, 5-6 year old cars are pristine. Here, they show signs of rust on any little scratch, some in wheel wells, and most in hidden pockets all over the underside of your car. There are some particularly bad spots on the MO, in terms of dirt traps, and these will all lead to corrosion after 5 or so years. Wheel wells, on the upper and trailing painted edges on all four wells, and under the plastic trim/guards.

Getting something like crown may not prevent the rusting on the chips and scratches, but it will help protect the hidden areas, and limit the creeping of rust from the edges of these painted surfaces on to their undersides. Getting inside the doors and such may be overkill, aside from the rear door, but there are some spots outside the door seals but inside the exterior panels (door sill) that you should also pay special attention to when cleaning.

Of course, you can just walk away after 7 years, and not suffer any real pains from the rust--but there is usually a clear visual difference between the rust-protected car and the nude one.
