Oil Change?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello,

Its gonna be my 1st MO oil change. I've been advised to change the oil every 6,000km or 3 months. I will change it every 5000 km religously.

Well, its been 4 months and i only drove 1200km. Does it have to be every 3 months??. I dont think that oil breaks down that quick without much use. Can i go another couple of months if i dont go over 5000km?. ( i've got 44000 on the MO)

Thanks
Corin
Lots of oil change topics on this forum, I suggest searching and reading through a few of them.

Many people are going the 5-6 months, 4000-5000 mile (6400 - 8000km) range. Particularly if you run synthetic.

I do 6-months, 5000 miles, and I don't get concerned if I go an extra thousand miles.

The old 3-month 3,000 mile BS that they had for so many years is very outdated. Engines have gotten better, manufacturing has gotten better, and oil has gotten better.

They just want you to pay for service more often than you need to.

Also depends on your driving habits. During the four months you have owned you MO, if you drove it 20 times and 60 miles every time, I would not worry about changing it. But if you drove it 200 times and 6 miles every time, I would change the oil. Oil on short trips where it does not heat up for long periods will tend to retain moisture and blow-by gas and will become acidic. So more frequent oil changes are required. In general, 6 month/5,000 miles is a good rule of thumb.

i used to work from home and now i'm riding the bus to work. the Mo is only used during the weekends. I made the mistake of getting the Maintenance Plus so I'm getting the oil change every 3 months since I have very low mileage. My Mo is just 1 year and 3 months old and has only 6000 miles but has undergone 5 oil changes. I am forced to go with the every 3 months oil change because the Maintenance Plus contracts expire after 5 years.

6000 miles in 15 months (roughly 65 weekends) translates to about 92 miles a weekend. I imagine you could go twice as long between oil changes. But more frequent oil changes are not going to harm the MO. Since you already paid for them, might as well use them. It is sort of inconvenient though....

I have a 2005 with 30,000 miles. Inquired at the dealer about the 30,000 mile service. I was told it would be around $350.00. Most of the things they do are checking this and checking that. Do you guys really think this is necessary at 30,000 miles. thanks guys.:3:

Just follow the manual.... change your air filter, cabin filter if you haven't done it recently, oil change.... I would replace all fluids, (cooling, AWD system if you have one), rotate tires and I Think thats about it.. did I miss anything. If they did that I could see about $350 for a dealer wouldn't be bad.

Is it really necessary to check this and check that at 30,000 miles? YES!

Is it really necessary to spend $350 to have the dealer do it? NO!!

You can do it all yourself for about 20% of what the dealer is charging.
