On the freeway home stuck in a jam, stopped, I was hit very well by a honda.
I imagined all sorts of ugliness. I sheperded the driver over 7 lanes to the shoulder and she ran up to my driver's window. I said GIRL, get yourself on the otherside before you get hit!
I got out the passenger door and surveyed the damage.
None, nada.
She had hit me square on the ball on my hitch, directly in the center of her bumper. Her fenders were pooched out, he bumper smashed in, her grill behind her hood line.
I said, girl, today is your lucky day.
She gave me a big hug and we continued on our way.

| You know, I was thinking about putting my tow ball on the other day. But I decided not to because I will not be towing anything in the near future. But now maybe I will do it after all..... |

Wish I could do that to but, we have a traffic law in Alberta that prohibits the trailer ball to be on unless you have a trailer on it.
Apparently too many people were getting a trailer ball in their grill. You wonder what ever happen to common sense.  |

| Did you get her information anyways? Sometimes it could look like there's no damage but could have some internal damage. Especially if her car was as jacked up as you described. You may want to get the frame and bumper brackets checked out. If they are damaged and you were to get rear ended again it could be bad news for you since the support is already damaged. |

I didn't get her info. I checked the lines of body fit, no problem.
When I got home, my two boys and I crawled under the rear and looked for anything warped or bent. Nothing is wrong.
All of the force was distributed across both unibody rails. All fit and finish of the doors (especially rear doors) was checked, no problems what so ever. Rear cargo door opens and closes with no trouble. The stock Nissan hitch cross bar is very substantial.
Yes, I had contemplated removing the ball the other day, but, my wife said I better not. I do trailer at least every other week.
And that IS a BS law about not having ball carriers on if you are not actively trailering. BUT, there may be a way around that:
Let them hit this.
I'm getting a 4" drop carrier for the wife's Tucson and mounting it upside down with a 2" ball.
Had this been a full sized truck or SUV that hit me, I would be very concerned about unibody damage, and, it probably would have impacted my bumper cover anyway due to their height.
I was very lucky it was a compact/sub compact car that hit me. |
