Annoying cracking/clicking sound - Click HERE for Original Thread
Blutiger
I just got my 09 MO LE a few weeks ago. From the first drive home (Bellingham to Vancouver) I heard this slight clicking sound during some rougher parts of the I-5. Now that I have successfully imported the car & driving it in the city basically 100% of the time. The clicking/cracking sound from the center console area is really annoying now . Does anyone else have this problem. It sounds like a small piece of plastic is being cracked in half all the time. Since I have no warranty in Canada, I would need to drive back to Washington. Does anyone have experience with this type of service work done to their car. I can't leave my car with them for a few days. Best I can do is arrive early & give them the day to work on it. Does that sound like a reasonable time frame?

Please, let me know if you find out cause I have the same cracking sound in my LE. Sounds like it is coming from around the speaker area underneath. I am going to have it checked out when I take it in for my oil change.

I'm hoping I have a free weekend this month to schedule an appointmrnt to resolve this very annoying noise. I can't pin the noise to an exact location, just somewhere in the center console. I'm only at 450 miles so my first service is quick aways off. Hopefully the service department can resolve this. I think we both deserve a squeek/rattle free new car. Actually everybody deserves that at this price point.

It kind of sounds almost like a wiring harness moving. Mines only got 2000 miles but I may just take it in sooner. It looks like it might be a project to get to and I am worried that it just might lead to other noises when they put it back together

Just a thought here. I noticed that both the console's double cup holder and little rectangular storage bin have removable inserts (presume they did this for cleaning purposes). The inserts are held in place with pressure expanding clips which are moulded on the outside surface of the insert. Maybe your clips are not lined up with the small well they expand into once they are secured in place. Why don't you remove the inserts and leave them out for a bit and see if you still hear the creaking noise (eliminate that cause) or re-install them making a conscious effort to be sure the clips are seated properly. The space between the insert and it's well is very close and seems to me to be a "creak" waiting to happen. Maybe a few strategically placed pieces of rubber tape are needed here. Hope this helps. Take care!

I have the same rattle in the dash (up by the center speaker) as you describe as well on my SL. It comes and goes (seems more frequent & louder in cold weather). I would was thinking the same thing about a wire harnass connector rattling on something. It seems like once it starts while driving, it doesn't stop.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with the problem as I've been living with it - I don't want to be the first to have my dash taken apart to try to find it, hopefully a service bulletin or something will come out on it soon.

If someone takes their car in and can provide details of what what done to fix it so other service departments can take advantage of it, I think all of us with the rattle would appreciate it!

I just drove a whole day with my cup holder & cigerrette/storage tray removed. Guess what. No plastic cracking sound. I still have this very slight creek from my centre console area. But the really annoying & loud cracking is gone. I tried puting the cup liner back first. Drove with no sound. Put the cigerrette/storage tray in...made alot of noise going in. Drove it for a bit. The noise came back. I tried wiggling the tray around & its just squeeks & made all this plastic bending sound. Well now I know where my headache was coming from.
Thanks red kiosk for your input.
But in the pursuit of finding more noise in my car. I discovered my driver side door panels vibrates & makes a very noticible noise when my stereo volume is almost half way up. Who has a solution for this one?

Blutiger,

Glad that suggestion worked for you, thats what I love about this forum. Now as for the vibration in the door panel… just be glad you don't have a 16-year daughter who cranks up the bass, driving your MO too. It brings that vibration to a whole new level! Take care!

I am sorry if I miss led you on the cracking noise coming from the center console as it comes from the same area as Graphite's does in the dash. It actually acts in the same manner as his does.

Has anyone had this cracking sound up by the center speaker in the dash fixed yet & if so, what was the problem? Mine still comes and goes, today was especially bad.

Thanks

Mine went away with the warmer temps graphite. I took my LE to the dealer but I was more concerned about my rims that I forgot to have it checked out. I'll try to remember when I get my new rims next week

I had these cracling sounds inside my 09 SL yesterday, the heat index was up to 94 yesterday. The cracking went away though once I cranked up the air conditioning and the temperature lowered inside the car. I think this will happen inevitably, as most of the inside materials are plastic and leather, these tend to expand/contract with temp changes, and I think that is why we get the cracking noises. Still annoying though.
