Installing fog lamps as daytime running lights - Click HERE for Original Thread
Roycape04
Hi all,

I'm a newbie to this site and I see there is a ton go very valuable information. Way to go!

I just imported a 2007 Murano S from the US 2 days ago and I need to install DRLs for Canadian regulations. Since the S model does not have any fog lights, I'm planning to install fog lamps and run them independently as DRLs. I already bought the DRL module. I have yet to buy the fog lamps. My questions are as follows:

1) Are the aftermarket fog lights that are sold on eBay any good. They're so much cheaper than the OEMs and I don't need to wire them into the current vehicle harness.

I also need to understand what the following wires look like:

2) I need to run one wire from the DRL module to a live 12 volt wire once the car is running (key in the ignition position - not accessories or start position) - does anyone know of a suitable connection in the relay panel under the dash? This turns the DRL relay on once the car has started.
3) I need to hook the DRL module to the highbeam wire to turn the fog lamps off when the high beam is on (that's the law). I know the high beam and low beam use the same bulb however which wire is the high beam live wire at the lights?
4) Where is the parking brake light wire? I can hook this up and it as an option to turn off the DRLs once the parking brake is on.
5) Which wire should I use for a starter wire. I can use this option to not have the DRL come on when the engine is cranking, only once it is running.

I know this was wordy and I hope I explained it well however if you're still reading and can provide me with any assistance, I would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks,

You CAN buy OEM fog lamps from ebay. Be careful though, there are scams which say they are OEM. Do a search here for my fog lamp install for altima's and S Murano's.

I'm not sure what module you are referring to.

If you tie the trigger wire for a relay to a hot-when-started wire, this should be all you need. Just tieing them to your head light wire will keep them from being on when you crank, unless of course you turn on your lights before cranking.

If you tie the trigger wire to your low beam switched wire, they will come on with low beams and go off on high beams. I'm not sure the coppers will be worried about your fogs being on with high beams though. Do you have to certify them or something?

All of the other options you would like to have with them sounds like you want them to act like factory. I think Canadian models are programed this way with the computer more than hard wired. It may be worth a visit to a dealer to see if they can do that for you if you want the factory options.

Lastly, you would have to swap out your stalk for one that has the fog switch on it if you want factory settings/actions. A few folks here have added home made circuits to accomplish many of the actions you want, try doing a search for day time running lights or DRL here.

I'd say non OEM fog lights are just as good as the OEM ones. But that is my opinion.

To do this install properly, you must invest in at least two items:

1- Murano Service Manual available from Nissan website for $20. You then have 24 hours to download the files and keep them on your computer for future use.
2- 12 volt voltage tester from your local automotive parts store.

You can locate all those wires you talked about using your voltage tester. They all exist (I installed my own DTRL, even built my own module) but I cannot tell you the wire colors because I don't have a 07.

Here is a picture from galery showing where I picked up ignition signal for my DTRL. Yours will be a different fuse.

Thanks for the response guys. The threads you referrred to helped very much.

In Canada, DRLs have to come on automatically once the car is driven and cannot be disabled while driving eg. using a switch to manually turn on or off. I like your suggestion of bypassing this DRL module and just tying it to a hot when started wire. I won't have the option of it going off when the high beams are on though. The module I'm referring to is a DRL module basically with a bunch of relays.

There are 7 wires to the DRL module:
1 hot to the positive
1 ground to the negative
1 hot wire to turn the DRL relay on when the car has started - I'll find one under the dash, someone else mentioned to use the oil pressure wire
1 wire to the fog lights
1 wire to turn the relay off when the high beams are on - attached to the high beams - is this the green or red wire?
1 wire to the cranking wire - turns off the relay when the car is cranking (this is optional and I won't hook it up)
1 wire to the parking brake - turns off DRL when parking brake is on(optional and I won't hook it up)

Hooked up like this, I'm won't be relying on the head light switch. The fog lamps would come on automatically when the car has started and will turn off when the high beams are on (apparently it's against the law to have high beams and fog lamps on at the same time due to the glare on the incoming traffic).

Looks like the passenger side may be tricky to get to. BTW - how do you remove the inner plastic liner in the wheel well. I see some screws as well as plastic inserts. Do the plastic inserts just pop out if you pry them? If I use the DRL module I think I'll put it next to the battery as you suggested for the relay.

Many thanks and I'll update as I progress.

Hi mgthe3,

Thanks for your input on my post on installing fog lamps on my 2007 S. I have a few other questions that I'm hoping you or someone else could answer.

1) When I'm removing the inner fender liner, I see some screws to remove, but what about the plastic clips? Do these just pop out if you pry them? I didn't want to break them.

2) Also, you mentioned that you modified the black plastic hole covers where the fog lamps were to serve as a trim ring. Was this difficult? Also, where did you get the chrome trim rings from and how much were they?

Many thanks for now,

Roy,

I haven't replaced the trim rings. I looked at an 07 Mo the other day and saw it was merely the same thing in high grey (silver) plastic.
I could take mine off and paint them with silver paint and they would be identicle.

Removing the plastic liner:
Remove the screws attaching the front of the wheel well to the chin spoiler, there are many. There are two plastic clips that you can pop out of their sockets and replaced with a firm whack with your hand. Do not "remove" it, merely pull it out of the way.

I tied my fog lamp relay switch wire to my low beam hot. That way, they do turn off with high beams-- making them legal all the way around.

Triming the rings..... quite a pain to do it nicely. I drilled a hole in line with the edge of the "ring" and inserted one of those "saws anything" round flexible hacksaw blades. Takes a bit of elbow grease and some attention to detail as the ring will be easily scuffed/scratched. On the other I chucked up a 3/8ths drill bit in my drill press and had at it. It is not as nice as the hack sawed one but took 1/4 of the time. Clean up with an exacto knife.

Thanks guys for your input and photographs. I had no issue installing the fog lamps. Thanks for also pointing me in the right direction of which type to get since I almost got a set on eBay that was not the OEM type.

I did not have to splice into any of the existing wires in the vehicle. I found enough ground connections in the engine compartment that I didn't have to ground to the battery.

I ran the hot wire to the battery using a U connector.

I also ran the trigger wire to the fuse panel under the dash and used one of the IGN positions to get the power source (Nissan was kind enough to label what is IGN, ACC etc on the fuse panel label). I had to make sure to only run it to one side of the fuse so that I didn't bridge the gap on the fuse and end up bypassing it.

The only other thing I need to do now is trim the rings for the front of the lamps.

Once that's done then it's time to install the hitch and wire that.

Many thanks again for all your help.
