opinions sought on amp and sub - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm in the process of upgrading the system on my 2006S (non Bose). My objective is richer and fuller sound, with a little more base. I'm not looking for super high volume or booming base. A local shop has recommended replacing the front speakers, and powering them with a 2 channel amp (2 x 60 watt RMS). They also recommended a 10" sub with powered with a 175 watt RMS single channel amp. Any opinions on whether this is a good medium priced approach? Also, they recommend Orion Cobalt amps, which I am not familiar with. Any opinions on those? The sub will be JBL. Changes I have already made are adding IPOD and Sirius, and I installed Infinity Reference tweeters in the dash. Thanks!

You can find 5 channel amps fairly cheap. I found a Kicker ZX700.5 on ebay for less than $170 and it has plenty of power for all 4 main speakers plus a sub. I think that's the best way to go.

Just an update on upgrading my "non Bose" system. I replaced the stock 6 x 9 speakers in the front door with a pair of Alpine SPS-609 3 way speakers and they are a nice improvement. Installation was pretty simple, using the door removal instructions that I had downloaded from this site. My next step is adding an amp and subwoofer, and I will let a sound shop install these. I may eventually add a 2 or 4 channel amp for the door speakers, but I think the sub might be enough for now. I considered the 5 channel amp that DFW mentioned, but I'm not sure that I need it.

As for adding an amp and sub; have a look at the Infinity Basslink. Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-BASS...r/dp/B000063TJY
It may be just what you need; all in one.
As for the amp for the front speakers; look for something clean. Since you are looking for a full sound; Kicker may not be what you need. They are good amps but made more for cranking:D . Talk to your sound shop to see what they might recommend. An amp that is "tune-able" for highs, mids and lows would do so you can make it produce the power for the sound you are looking for.
I would highly recommend a 4-chl if you decide to go with the Basslink and then change out your OEM 6.5" rear rounds with another Alpine co-axle or the same type that you got for the front. It will add the nice "tight" punchy base from the rear. The sub in the trunk will fill in with the ultra-lows and your 6x9's up front will be there right in between the punch and lows.
Good luck with that....

Thanks for the input, BikerJohn, and thanks to Pat in DFW also. The Basslink looked interesting, and got me thinking about powered subs. The man at the soundshop I talked with suggested a 10" sub with a separate amp, which might be more than I really need for my listening habits. I looked at powered subs at Crutchfield, and they had a Blaupunkt that looked interesting also, but it was only 70 watts rms, which might be a little underpowered. It looked small enough to fit under the seat.

Here's another made by Clarion if you are considering for under the seat...

I know some people that dont like the Basslinks that much, and I dont know why cause IMO they sound very clean.

Plus if you need to remove it for more space it would be way more easier than removing a sub, and a amp separately

The BassLink looked interesting, and I've used Infiniti speakers before with success. My first choice would be something that fit under a seat, so I'm looking into those. I take it that you 've had good experience with the BassLink. Any problems with reliability? I looked at reviews on Crutchfield, and some people reported problems.
