A/C Compressor Cycling - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have an 03 MO, and have been noticing that the ac seems to be cycling on/off more frequently lately. Am I just paranoid, or is this something I need to keep an eye on?

I live in TX. Bought the car in TX and I thought I remembered the car not cycling the ac on/off as much.

Granted, it is warm down here in the summer, but just wanted to get some info on how often other people's ac cycles in hot weather (lets say mid 90s).

One thing I might add is that I was under the impression the ac was not cooling as much as it should and I pumped a little more 134a into it (about third to half of a standard small can). Would increased pressure in the system cause the ac to start cycling more often on/off?

Thanks.

No.
You must have let the freon out.
constant cycling is a symptom of LOW freon.

If you are going to be adding freon to a $1000 AC system, you really should invest in the pressure gauges and take a short course in AC repair.

The other way to do it is to take your time.
Put a little freon/puron in and wait. Then measure Outlet temp.
Repeat.
When outlet temp starts to rise, stop.
Don't release this stuff into the atmosphere.

My suggestion: Belly up to the bar and take it to an independent AC shop.

That is exactly what I did. Used proper gauges to do this. I forgot now how much pressure should have been there but it seemed it was about 20psi too low on the low side. So I bumped it to the recommended pressure, keeping in mind the temp of interior at full on. The AC works fine and is super cold (before I thought it was cold but not super cold).

All works fine, except in the hot weather I am noticing the ac compressor seems to cycle more often.
No, I did not release any refrigerant out. Guaranteed.

I have repaired ac systems on cars before and am familiar with the components and operation. Just wondering about the cycling. It might perfectly be since it is hot, but I want to find the answer without having to wait until winter.

...rechecked it and pressure is just fine. The temp is optimal too. I guess it must be the upper 90s and 100s temps we are having here for the last month or so.

Will be sure when they go away and we have more moderate temps.
