very poor fuel mileage 05 - Click HERE for Original Thread
krenkey
Hi guys i am a relatively new owner bought a 05 murano Se with approx 80000 KMS on it my question is the following.

In the city i get approximately 15.2 MPG driving very sanely always keeping the accelerator under 2000 rpm my wife recently went on a road trip 7 hours one way and the mileage never went above 16.1 MPG she drives very cautiously always under 65 MPH she was using the AC most of the way. Should i be getting better than 15 to 16 MPG recently i changes the air filter and a new oil change is there something i am missing here ????? I am under the impression i should be getting easily 27 MPG driving on the HWY under 65 MPH
njjoe
krenkey-

My '05 gets about 16 mpg around town and mid-twenties if I keep her around 60 mph. I can get 29 and change if I lighten up on the pedal and keep the speedo at 50 mph.

Are you running stock tires? The reason I ask is because larger diameter wheels will adversely affect the mpg readout.

brand new tires 18 inch rims 33 psi all the way around
SanJoseMO
something is wrong. a 7 hr trip without exceeding 65 mph??? your mpg readout should be much higher. my daily drive has me on the freeway for 33 miles and the rest is city streets. freeway speed for me is 75-85mph, and city street traffic is stop n go for about 20 minutes(san francisco traffic). my mpg readout from day 1 varies beween 18.2-19.3 mpg. and i have checked the accuracy per fill-up as well. 91 octane chevron and a/c is cranking every time I drive, and I admit I have a heavy foot around town and on highway.

these mpg variances must be attributed to engine manufacturing at nissan plants. i see great fuel variances in these posts and besides maintenance, tire pressure, etc., I cannot think of another explanation. maybe this explains why some newer murano's (07-09)cvt's crap out before 10,000 miles and many 03's going strong pass 100,000 miles...the explanation lies within the jatco plant.
krenkey
So what do i do then ??
Gonzo
Before I jump in and say your milleage should be higher... what kind of roads was she on? Hilly, flat etc?

Also how does you wife drive? Under 2K RPM what about during acceleration from a stop and while coming up to speed?
krenkey
obviously i am going to explore every possible avenue to rectify this as 16 mpg on the hwy under 65 mph is just not acceptable i was getting 17 MPG with a full size GMC truck pulling a 3000lb boat i got rid of the truck and bought the murano as my primary vehicle i still pull the boat with the murano but on this trip my wife wasnt pulling anything i do realize that when i pull my boat i will get less MPG but that i understand when i am not pulling it i shlould get way more.
SanJoseMO
I experienced better mpg when I switched to MOBIL 1 synthetic oil. Check to see if your steering pulls, out-of-whack alignment will decrease your fuel economy. bring it in to a nissan specialist(if you are outside of warranty- no dealers... make sure fuel, air systems are fine. check spark plugs(even though they are good to 105k, one may have bit the dust).
krenkey
flat roads accelerated under 2000 rpm i told her to try for 1700 rpm on accelerate there are no slow downs on the road she was on she had the cruise set at 105 km's per hour or 62 MPH with AC set to medium.

We had an alingment , changed air filter and fresh oil change done when we bought it and also got the extended warranty
krenkey
But really even in the city with very conservative driving and i mean conservative we should be getting more than the reported 15.1 MPG in the city correct ?
Gonzo
Yea that is low. I drive about 80% city... and I am light on accel and about 75-80MPH on the highway... I am averaging just over 19 MPG.

When I accelerate I am right about 12-1400 RPM.

Wow - I'll consider myself lucky. Even in the winter, my readout was slightly below 20, if below at all. Over the 15 months I've owned my MO, the average over that entire time is about 21.

We just went on vacation and put on about 1,000 miles over 4 days, and the mileage readout was near 26 the entire time. (and the computer is often about 1 mpg high)

I don't have any suggestions unfortunately, but that does seem mighty low...
krenkey
I guess when my wife gets home i will take it to the dealer and see what they find

How are you calculating the MPG?
Looking at the computer?
Have you ever done a reset?
And DON'T read the "instantaneous MPG" as that means........pretty much nothing.

MPG should be calculated the old fashioned way.
That is, fill the tank completely. I mean top it off.
Reset on of the trip odometers to 0.
Drive the test distance.
Top it off.
Divide the test distance by the gas used to top it off.
Insome instances this willbeclose to th eComputer read out.
In other instances the reading will be significantly different.

When engines have 80,000KMs on them, the time to talk about manufacturing differences is long past.
When we are talking about a used car, we are taking about an unknown history.
What is more likely, if the MPG is TRULY 16.1 on the road, I would suggest that this car was never maintained and the engine is shot.
Let's hope that that is not the problem.

Thanks for the reply i have done a MPG the old fashion way and it comes out pretty close to the computer readout lets say within .4 MPG. As for the reset that is when you go to the MPG screen and just hold the reset button correct ? if that is the way to do it then yes i have done that.

That too was my first thought as previous low mpg will be a drag on the new miles traveled so a reset is a must if you want to get the actual trip mpg but you said you did that so.....

Maybe dragging brake pads?

Dan
krenkey
There was one caliper that was ceased up so the rear caliper, pad and rotor were replaced that was about 7 days ago they checked all the other brakes at the same time and none were found bad filled up the tank and my wifey went on her trip
Gonzo
I've always found dragging brakes by placing the car on a very small incline and putting it in neutral. If it didn't roll bingo, I had a stuck brake.

Maybe another one is sticking.

Unfortunately I think I (we) know what the dealer is going to say about this.

If you took your MO to the dealer and they found a seased caliper then you should see your MPG go up. Obviously, anything that applies a constant friction to your system is going to drop MPG.

My MO with 5 people in it fully loaded down with luggage gets about 22MPG. There is no reason why yours shouldn't be getting more if you're a conservative driver.

When was the last time you cleaned your fuel system? Is your engine breathing restricted with a paper filter? I would be interested to know if you're injectors are dirty as well. Pour 6.5oz of Acetone in your next tank fillup. It will clean your whole fuel system and restore peak performance. Also install a K&N filter to let it breathe better. I hate those generic paper filters!

Ok folks after my wife got home i re-examined my fuel logs for an error or some other form of mistake and i found that my wifes 1 looked like a 7 in the fuel log book it turns out that we are getting 227.6 miles per gallon so that is good then on the hwy.

My next question is why is the displayed MPG so far off on the display ??
krenkey
urm 27.6 not 227.6
SanJoseMO
that sounds like a much better number. i have experimented with my driving habits and tried having a easy steady foot in town and cruise control at 60-65 on freeway. I get much better mileage when i do this- after checking after a full fuel up to empty in this old- man style of driving have gotten up to 24mpg. i do admit that i wish I had the patience to drive like that all the time, but i love listening to my intake with z-tube on heavy acceleration:4: nice growl that turns heads.
krenkey
I definately thiink it is better now i will see what kind of MPG i get pulling my 3000 lb boat for 1500 miles
dodgefan
let us know how it goes pulling your boat. how much does it weigh? ive been thinking of getting a truck to pull a bass boat, but if i can do it with the MO, i'll just get a hitch installed :)

back on topic. we just drove from charlotte to atlanta and got 25+ mpg for that trip. reset the trip computer before we left. my wife drives in town and we only take highway trips once in awhile and our mpg is usually around 19 for the most part.
krenkey
Just got back the other day and did a mileage track and we got 23.50 MPG pulling the boat at 62 MPH.

I did install trailer brakes to ease the pressure on the MO's breaks all in all id did very very well.

With my GMC sierra 1500 V8 we got 17 mpg @ 55 MPH for the same route

Forgot to add it is an 18 foot lund Pro V 3000 lbs with a 1/4 tank of fuel and all my gear
dodgefan
wow, thats impressive! thats a good size boat. might not need a truck after all :)
krenkey
I was very apprehensive to get rid of my truck and make the MO a dedicated puller of the Lund in the summer time but i am really impressed in its performance and this is commin from a long time trucker
Warhammer
Looks like you're getting the gas mileage you should be getting. Looks like you're a conservative driver. You're also at a lower elevation too so that also helps.

Up here in Albuquerque we're at about 4500 feet all the time. Makes the MPG drop down to about 21.5 to 22.5.

Glad to hear the MO pulls well. I was about to get the factory hitch setup myself.
Eric L.
That is outstanding fuel economy - 27.6! I can't get that in my MO, ever, even with all highway driving. Best I did was around 23mpg on a 600 mile trip, but around town, I get 15 mpg.
ekaxel
US or Canadian gallons???
krenkey
That is US MPG just cam back from another road trip with the boat and 21 MPG out 22 back loaded to the hilt. I only drive 60 miles per hour at the fastest speed

That's the secret to getting good MPG with the MO. You need to keep the speedometer at or under 60 mph. Once you get above 60 the MPG plummets.

While i pull the boat i try to keep the MO in top gear actually lug it up the hill a little ill reduce speed while i climb to keep it in the top gear then gradually increase the speed back up to the 60 MPH mark. It was a lot easier to do that in my Gmc 1500 because i had custom exhaust work done so i could tell where the shift points are the MO is a little different just have to go by feel.
bullbug88
recently, i living @ nashville ,TN ,it's about 7 miles from home to work, i get around 21-22 around, not to mention up hill/down hill all the way.
if you on HWY with 65 always , i sure you can get above 25 mpg with no problum
with v6 3.5L , roomy , comfort and all that !
I LOVE MY M.O.
