Relay required for new fogs? - Click HERE for Original Thread
Hazardous
Greetings,

I read up on installing fogs all over this group and I have one question. I'm only planning to have them go on with the low beams so I was planning on running the hot wire driectly to the low beam while the other wire is grounded. I didn't intend to install a relay, will this be a problem? Will it by chance make the headlight dimmer?

Just afraid that adding that extra level of difficulty of a relay may push me beyond my means.

I have an 06 Murano S

Thanks Very Much in advance!

Hi, Do you mean running the power for the fogs from the low beam? I would not recommend this as it will exceed the load on the circuit for the low beams. You should use a separate circuit with a relay with a fuse.

Gonzo - thanks for such a quick reply! Yes, that is correct I was planning on using the power from the low beam to run the fog. Now with your feedback I'll head to the dealer tomorrow to seek a relay.

Do you know the size or some way I can identify the relay that's needed?

Thanks so much!

The size of the relay will bepend on the draw from your fogs. Also you don't need to get a relay from the dealer, in fact they might not be able to help you unless you are using Nissan parts for your installation. Any auto parts store will have what you need.

have you performed an amp draw on the low beam circuit to see what they truly draw. Compare this to the fuse size of that circuit. I would be very surprised to find both the low beams and new fog lights would overload this ciruit.

Each low beam headlight draws about 3A, a 55W fog will draw 4-5A, very close to the low beam fuse rating, and well beyond the margin of safety....

Isnt the margin of safety dictated by the fuse rating. If not than why would the manufacturer install such a high rated fuse. And what may I add dictates the margin of safety. Sounds like a manufacturer's term to avoid specifics.

HAVING A MOD SUCH AS A HOMEMADE HARNESS FOR THE RECIEVER HITCH WOULD BE WELL BEYOND THE MARGIN OF SAFETY.

You MUST use a relay.
I got a 30 amp relay from Advance auto parts for $4.00. It was sealed with epoxy, a MUST for under hood placement.
