Hi,
I hope one of you gentlemen can help me. My '05 MO (50,000 mls)just left me stranded b/t San Antonio & Austin and I don't know were to begin. I stopped to get gas so I turned off the engine and when I tried to turn it back on --nothing (my MO would not start). The battery was replaced about 6 mths ago, so I know it can't be that. Nonetheless, I had someone jump it and nothing. Also, the key would not go all the way back to its original position and it kept making this beeping noise and it would not allow me to shift to Neutral. While waiting inside the MO for my ride I opened the door and the alarm went off repeatedly.
Unfortunatley, I had to leave it in the gas station till tomorrow morning when I can get to it. I woul appreciate any advice about what I can do before I have to have it towed to the dealership of if any of you know of a good mechanic in New Braunfels, TX, I would appreciate a recommendation.
Thank you for your help! |

It does not sound like the battery like you said since your alarm went off.
You mentioned that you could not shift into neutral. What gear is the shifter "stuck" in?
I'm wondering if your shifter interlock is stuck. The car will not start unless it is in P park or N neutral.
If that is the case; you may need to manually "unlock" your shifter interlock.
It is located just above the "P" on the shifter console. There is a small round black cap about the diameter of a crayon. You need to pop that off with any small (screwdriver; knife; paper clip; hairpin etc).
For the next part you will need a screwdriver or a thin long key thats about 2 inches long.
Insert whatever you can get into that small hole and push down. This will release the mechanical interlock allowing your shifter to be able to move into P or N allowing you to start the car.
If there is no other problems present with the car; it should allow you to start it from there.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you for your response Biker John. It's good to know what I can do with the shifting if it locks up on me again, although I hope it doesn't.
So, it turns out that it was the battery! This is crazy b/c it's almost new and all the bells & whistles were going off. Anyhow, AutoZone replaced the battery and I got it home. I'm scheduled to get the alternator checked at my local dealership on Saturday (I hope it doesn't drain it before then).
Thanks again for your help! |

This is very interesting.
When I replaced my battery, the new one lasted only two weeks before it died. I replaced it with another new one, which also promptly died about a month later. Rather than changing it for the third time, without taking it out, I put it under my trickle charger for 24 hours. The battery came alive and has been perfect ever since. I think it has probably been more than 6 months now.
Go figure! |

Does anybody know why this is? I'm hoping that my MO won't go on the fritz when I replace the battery this winter. I have an 04 MO and I'm still on the factory battery. Are there any rules of thumb that should be used when replacing the battery on a MO?

Just don't leave it without a battery in it for an extended period.
Losing the presets on your radio is irritating but not a real problem. However if you leave the battery out for hours, you may have to have the computer Idle Learn Procedure performed by the dealer.
So, take the old battery out, and put the new battery in.
Shouldn't take 30 minutes.
These failed new batteries sound like a battery problem, not a Murano problem.

It sounds like it, but I am not so sure if that is true. Both my new batteries died without any warning whatsoever, after being parked for only a very short period of time (less than 15 minutes). I replaced the first one but when the second one died the exact same way I thought something else was at play. So without touching anything else to avoid introducing any other variables, I just charged the battery. But it has been perfect ever since so whatever caused the problem has been fixed, but what? |

When I had my battery replaced with a Die-Hard (about 3 weeks before I traded in my MO, LOL!) I asked them to make sure it wasn't off power for too long. The tech was decent enough to hook up an auxiliary power source to the terminals while he swapped the battery so my MO never lost power. That was good of him to do. I didn't expect that.
I could have installed the battery myself but they offered to do it for free, so I said "sure, go for it." Plus I was in a hurry. |
