Exhaust Flange near rear muffler - Click HERE for Original Thread

The flange at the rear of my exhaust (right before going into the muffler), broke. Nissan tech said that he has seen quite a few like this. I am going to replace the muffler because I can still use the flange that is on the pipe coming from the catalytic convertor. Sick of these rust / corrosion issues. The Nissan tech said that condensation accumulates right at the bend (poor design). If Nissan repaired it, they would replace the whole pipe running from the convertor. I guess I could also cut the flange off, bend a piece of pipe to fit over the bend and have it welded.

Cush-

Are they doing the repair under warranty? If not, then why are you having them do the repair?

our mechanic at my work is replacing the muffler. he doesn't want to weld feeling that it would be too thin? My main goal is to get it fixed as efficiently as possible.

Ah, co-workers doing the job for you! Awesome.

I had a muffler chop-shop weld a new pipe in place for my MO a few months ago. This was on the flange in front of the center muffler, so a different spot than yours, but he only charged $60 total to chop out the entire flange and weld a new pipe in place. Additionally he tucked that center muffler up tighter to the body to get a bit more clearance and hide it a bit. I'm very happy with the result, particularly for the price I paid. Dealer wanted to replace the whole pipe forward and backward of the flange, to the tune of $1300 for parts, and add on labor on top of that.

Yes, I would have done that too if my boss didn't offer our mechanic to fix it this way. I figured if I had a piece welded , then had to replace the muffler in a year or so, it would cost more then.

What do you mean by, "the front muffler"? I have the catlytic convertor (more to the front) and the muffler which sits sideways in the back.

There is a front (center) muffler that runs parallel to the vehicle (front to back) and a rear muffler that runs side to side.

See diagram below (taken from enissanparts). Part #4 has the cats, it joins up to part #8 which contains most of the exhaust pipe and the center muffler, and it joins to part #10 which is the rear muffler and tailpipe.

Oh, by the way I'm talking about my 2005 Mo, not sure if the 09 is different.

enissanparts.com has a lot of diagrams like this if you look up the parts for your vehicle. Pretty cool, I use it a lot when I don't have my service manual PDFs available. One of these days I might actually have to BUY something from them to show my support... :D
