Could someone tell me the difference between 1" MMD tweeters (come in Kappa speakers) & 1" silk dome tweeters?
I think they are both dome tweeters, but just different materials?
Is one better than the other for clean sound or is it personal preference?

It's just a different material / manufacturing process.
MMD cones are aluminum core, anondized on both sides and machined to a uniform thickness. They say it produces a more rigid, lightweight driver which delivers cleaner sound and less distortion.
In the real world... are you going to hear a difference? Maybe. That's going to depend more on the REST of the system than just the material the tweeters are made of.
Speaker selection is ALWAYS subjective. If a $10 speaker sounds better to you than a $400 speaker, buy the $10 speaker.
My *personal* preference would probably be for the silk dome. I do not like harsh, sharp highs. However, I have not actually heard the MMD Kappa tweeters -- they might sound beautiful. Other titanium or aluminum core tweeters I've heard tend to be a bit too sharp for me. You really have to listen to them both and just decide which you like better. |
