Radiator Problems - Click HERE for Original Thread

My '03 is now about to have it's 4th radiator installed. Is anyone else having issues with theirs? I have had classic cars with 40 year old radiators in them and no problems. I now am having one replaced that Nissan installed less than 2 months ago. WTF? I'm sorry to say but the MO is getting traded in after this........... It is now out of the extended warranty I purchased when new.

Four radiators?!? Are they failing at the seams or being punctured by road debris?

I've owned Nissans (almost exclusively) for over 20 years and have never had - nor even heard of - radiator problems with them.

Peruse Nissan boards as well, and you'll rarely see even a mention of radiator trouble.

Not that it helps you, but yours is truly an unusual problem.

My question exactly....
Eric L.
What exactly was the problem with your radiator? I've driven Nissans for 11 years and never had a radiator problem.
Darrell Sheldon
They have all been seam failures, faulty welds and the such. This is really buggin me as to how so many in such a short amount of time could do this.bizaar!
Gonzo
Are they Nissan radiators?
njjoe
Darrell Sheldon-

The MO's radiator is not welded together. The upper and lower plastic caps are secured to the aluminum cooling fins with a continuous crimp. There is a rubber gasket sandwiched in between.

The radiator is under relatively low pressure - 11 to 14 psi. According to the service manual it is tested for 23 psi. Leaking radiators are very rare on the MO. Most reports of leaks are due to FOD.

Has your MO ever been in a front-end accident? The reason I ask is that it may be possible that the mounting points for the radiator are slightly offset and that could cause a mechanical strain on the radiator housing which could result in the repeated failures.

Exactly what happened to mine after the accident last year. I drove 800 miles, and started to smell coolant. Had the radiator replaced, and no further problems....

The radiator is secured in place very loosely to, I assume, accommodate heat expansion and cold contractions. As Joe put it, if it is tight, it may put strain on the reservoirs and cause a leak.
Eric L.
Yeah I believe the radiator is mounted in rubber bushings and can wobble around a little bit.
Darrell Sheldon
No ,Sorry never been in any type of accident. She has always had them installed by Nissan dealerships as well. The first failure was about 2 1/2 years ago, so this will be number four in that short amount of time. Have to think they are just getting theirs from bad suppliers....
njjoe
Darrell Sheldon-

I find it very hard to believe the problem is with the radiators themselves. Four failures in 30 months is just too far from the norm. The MO's cooling circuit has seen very few failures, and most of those are due to radiators that were holed by rocks.

Something just seems very odd.

What did they give you in the past - factory fresh or rebuilt radiators?

Sorry Joe- do not know. They were installed by 2 different dealerships all they had said was they were def. seam failures, not punctures. BTW the Mo is now out of the shop with #4 in it. Whoo hoo! The possibility is a bad batch and since only mine are being replaced I get all these baddies. luck of the draw

Never a problem, 04-MO 02-Altima and 04 Infiniti G-35 coupe.

What in the world is happening with your car?

They probably just keep swapping out the same two units.

Pull it, refurb, give it back to Darrell....
Darrell Sheldon
Well I gave Nissan a try and the Mo is a beautiful car but after 1 tranny, 2 wheel sensors and 3 radiators in 5 years of easy service and meticulous maintenance-I'm going back to Toyota, they never let us down in over 15 years of ownership, 3 vehicles-zero parts.
She still looks showroom fresh and probably is just fine now, but I just do not feel happy right now. You all have been wonderful-cheers;)

When working with statistics there is always a group known as outliers.
These are numbers that are FAR outside the usual parameters.
It could be a Nissan battery that lasted 6 years.
Or 4 CD players in less than 3 years.
Or 4 radiators.

BTW it was Gonzo's battery that continues to chug along and my CD player that was replaced 3 times in 3 years.

Outliers don't make any sense.
But what is, is.

I would do the same as you.
In-depth analysis can be fun, but when it is a problem that renders the rest of the vehicle inoperable, it's just not worth fooling with.

BOL with your Toyota.

Thanks Homer, The deep underlying problem is the lack of trust. I travel much(away from home) and I need to depend on the vehicle. The CD player may render some people inoperable, however the things I had problems do in fact mess with your world in a big way. Attached is the new ride. Cheers-D
njjoe
Darrell Sheldon-

Good luck with your new ride.

It is a shame you had to give up the MO because of lousy service. I probably would have done the same.

My '06 radiator just gave out too along with the transmission. Car has got less than 40,000 kms on it. They said mine is the 3rd radiator they have replaced on Muranos here.

M7-

Did the dealer indicate if the radiator and CVT failures were related in any way?
