Replacing Rear Shocks - Click HERE for Original Thread
BikerJohn
Hi guys;

I'm looking to replace my rear shocks on my '03 SL. The rear is squating about 3/4" lower than spec.

My questions:

Has anyone replaced theirs with other than OEM? If so; what brand and how have they performed?

How did Non-OEM affect alignment?

I'm looking at something slightly more heavy duty since I'm pulling a trailer quite a bit.

Any thoughts on KYB's?

Your input and any information will be much appreciated w/thanks:4:

BJ-

Replacing the shocks will do nothing for the squat. If your MO is sagging in the rear then that is an indication that the rear springs need to be replaced.

Since you tow a trailer you might want to consider air-bags like those used by MightyMo.

Joe is absolutely correct - the height is determined by the springs, not the shocks.

Thanks Joe; Eric.

I did think of the springs but didn't expect them "wear" out but I guess they do.

My shocks do absorb the rebound and is smooth thoughout the travel but I thought that the shocks might have had some + pressure on them that may have faded reflecting on the sag.

Joe; I'll have to look into the "air-bag" that MM used. Thanks for that lead.

MightyMo installed air springs on his MO so he could tow his race-ready Z. The following link will take you to his site where he explains (with photos) how he installed the air springs.

Check out MightyMo's site - MightyMO's Air Springs .

Don't be confused when you see the underside of MightyMo's MO. He installed a set of custom skid-plates that covered 75% of the body.

MightyMo has since sold his MO and walked off into the sunset...

Thanks for that info and link Joe!

I had a look and it is an option that will work for me and I have placed my Air Lift kit on order:D

It seemed like a simple solution and a low investment compared to replacing the springs.

The best part is that I can use it when I need it and choose not to if I don't with my compressor that I have in my trailer:4:

Thanks again!!!

Yes; I will post some pics after doing so.

I ordered the parts yesterday online from 4x4part.com and they have emailed me twice since confirming the order and once today to let me know that it has been shipped with a tracking number. So far; this site's service has been a very positive experience.

Will keep you posted!
