I just got a quote from a local mechanic to do the following:
1) replace spark plugs (i am supplying the plugs)
2) replace transmission fluid (I am supplying fluid)
3) replace drive belts (i supply belts)
4) oil change (he will provide oil and filter)
5) replace coolant (he will supply coolant)
6) general engine tune??
7) replace wipers
8) he may thrown in a New York state inspection too, although I think he may charge me extra for this
9) change cabin filter (i supply filter)
He has quoted me $500.
Do you think this is reasonable?
Having read the thread about changing the cabin filter, i think i will do that myself. I will also change front wipers.
As always all comments advice. |

$500 is a great rate!
1) There is about 2 to 3 hours labour in replacing the spark plugs. You will also need to get an intake manifold gasket if I'm not mistaken.
2) Make sure you use ONLY Nissan's NS-2 CVT fluid. They cost $19/qrt and to do a "drain and fill" will take about 7 qrts. To do a more intensive "flush and fill" will take 10 qrts.
9) Cabin filter can be done yourself in less than 5 mins.
Otherwise this sounds like a very reasonable rate IMO. |

| I'd say the price is reasonable. The two most labor intensive jobs are spark plug and belt replacements. If you go by dealer rates, these two alone will eat up $500. Add labor for coolant, engine oil/filter, and CVT fluid change and it makes it a good deal. |

Imster-
While the price seems reasonable, I am curious as to why you are doing this maintenence. How many miles are on your MO? The plugs are good for 105,000 miles and the CVT fluid is good for even longer under normal use. That would leave just the oil, three filters, wipers and belts.

| Has anyone actually determined what the replacement schedule is for the CVT fluid? I don't recall hearing/reading that the CVT is good for over 105K miles under "normal" use. Did I miss something? |

According to the service manual the "Preferred Maintenance" lists CVT fluid replacement at 48,000 km; 96,000 km; 144,000 km and 192,000 km and so on. Mind you that these are "Preferred" schedules and not the Sch 1 or 2.
Both schedule 1 and 2 do not shcedule CVT fluid replacement anytime before 192,000 km.
However; at 48,000 km(and the above intervals) they do note that CVT fluid replacement should be preformed (not just inspected) IF "towing trailers, using a camper or a car-top carrier, or driving on rough or muddy roads."
That pretty much includes everyone at one point or another in that statement. |

Come on, Gonzo, you know the answer to this one. :4:
It's the magic "CVT Fluid Deterioratiobn Date" that is accessed via the Consult-II diagnostic tool. The CVT fluid needs to be changed when the unit-less value is greater than 210,000. It looks like the value is calculated similar to oil change monitors found on many newer cars.
I do not recall anyone reporting a figure greater than 50,000. The extrapolated mileage figure was something like 250,000 miles.

Thanks for all the responses.
I just bought my 2003 MO. It has 93.5k on the clock. Unfortunately, it has little service history. I know its had various oil changes, but not sure about the rest. For piece of mind, I thought I might as well get the major stuff done and out of the way. The car runs pretty well. But winter is approaching.
I probably could have done alot of the work myself (I hate paying mechnaincs), but since moving to the States and living in an apartment, I have no tools or place to dismantle etc.
A mechanic was recommended to me. He seems honest enough, and didn't try to sell more work.

| For $500 and the cost of materials; I think that it's worth it just for the peace of mind going into the winter:4: |

I knew about the unitless number but I didn't realize that it comes up with that high of a mileage... It would be interesting to plot out the unitless value and mileage from various users that have had it performed. |
