Oil Cooler Gasket Change - Click HERE for Original Thread
BikerJohn
It seems like a common problem for the Oil Cooler's gasket to start a slow leak so I thought I would post a How-To on how to change the gasket for the Oil Cooler.

I hope that it has not been posted before.....

You will need the following items:

1)-Gizmo 2000(you'll see)
2)-New Cooler Gasket (part # B1304-43U00 $5.13)
3)-22mm Deep Wall socket & torque wrench
4)-New Oil Filter (if you decide to change it)

Step 1: Remove the Oil Filter using the Gizmo 2000

Step 2: Using the 22mm Deep Wall socket driver; remove the Cooler Mounting bolt.

There will be Oil coming out from behind there so have lots of rag sitting just underneath on the suspension member or you can try to catch some more with the Gizmo 2000.

Step 3: Remove the bolt completely. There will be some oil in it too.

Clean up the engine block area where the gasket will contact.

This part is a little tricky if you didn't remove the front wheel. I had to really crawl into the wheel well (with the wheel on) to see the actual gasket on the back-side of the cooler housing.

Remove the old gasket (I just kind of picked at it with my fingers) and clean up that surface.

Get the New gasket and apply a thin coat of motor oil (like you do for your oil filter chages) to both sides of the new gasket.

Place the new gasket into the groove on the back of the cooler housing.

Place the mounting bolt into the housing's hole and start threading it back together.

Make sure that the alignment "notch" of the housing lines up with it's mating counterpart on the block at about 2-o'clock.

Tighten bolt using a torque wrench at about 31-40 ft-lbs.

Final step: Re-install the Oil filter(2/3 past contact by hand). Don't forget to top off the oil from the loss(about 1/2 to 2/3 qrt.).

Here is the comparison from the new gasket to the old.

If your gasket starts to leak; it really doesn't help to tighten down the housing's bolt since the housing "bottoms out" on the engine block.

Hope that helps others;)
