I have a 2004 Murano that I have had about months. About 3 weeks a go Service Engine Light came on. Thought maybe I just didn't put the cap on right, took it to the dealer who said that it is the tranfer case leaking. I have no oil on my drive way. They put some dye in in and saw a leak with a black light. Still no leaks on drive way. The tech said that the oil must be blowing back under the car. IS this possible or am I getting a BS story. I am not to mechanically inclined so this is new to me.
I also have a noise when I start out slow of the line. Kind of the sound when I didn shift right in my old standard, which I did not do well with. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated.
They quoted me 1200 to fix the transfer case. |

Well it is possible... most leaks from the transfer case are small enough that it would not drip on to the ground. If you look under the car you should see a greasy mess someone. If you search on the forrum there will be pictures.
The only thing I find odd is why would they use dye for such a small component to find the leak? |

Hmmm; I'm not sure about that transfercase bit. I just changed the gear oil in my T-C and it only takes about 1/3 to 1/2 qrt. of gear oil.
If you had a leak; you would see dirt sticking to the fluid around where the leak is.
I also would not think that a leaky T-C would cause the SES light to go off (others can correct me on this one if they know for sure)??....
Do you still have any part of your warranty coverage?
Regarding the noise; does it sound like a clatter? If so; it could be engine knock/pinging. Sometimes it is caused by using low grade gas but the Murano has an anti-knock sensor built in to prevent that.
Keep an eye for other posters to see what other feedback you will get about your experience and BTW - Welcome!:D |

Thanks for the input. Just some weird stuff I think. Ok and this might be a weird question, but why would my engine oil go down if the transfer case is leaking. It sounds like it is gear oil. Remember I am a beginner.
I thought maybe the gas too on the ping. I was told it would take a tank or two of the good stuff to get rid of it. Sound right.
I am so glad I found this place.
Finally any good leads on extened warrenties? |

Your engine oil and T-C are not connected so if your engine oil is low; it won't be due to any problems with your T-C.
The dipstick location on the MO is a terrible one. It is situated directly in an oil flow canal that reverts oil back down to the oil pan from the valve lifter area. Being in that location makes checking the oil level very cumbersom. Oil continually drips/touches onto the dipstick.
The trick is to do it after the car sits for a little while. Then remove your dipstick; wipe clean; insert and remove quickly after bottoming out all in one motion. You should be able to get a better reading.
The pinging shouldn't happen with any grade of oil. The MO is equipped with an "Anti-knock" sensor and corrects for timing to reduce it. I do admit that I do get that from time to time but not all the time.
For warranty; try a search using "extended warranty". You will see some threads on what others have found for that. :4: |
