Ventilation mode - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi all,

Lately I seem to notice a weird occurrence on my ventilation mode. Living now in Vegas I tend to have the AC running all the time. What's weird is when I have the AC on I set it to recirculate mode and it stays there until I change it to fresh air mode. However, once in while it just swtich itself to fresh air mode while the AC is running without touching any controls. Has anyone notice this occurence? I usually notice the swtich when I start smelling the exhaust of vehicles specially those bobtail trucks and semis. KInda annoying that it just go to fresh air/open mode by itself. Does anyone has a theory on this? Thanks.

Are you using the automatic climate control? I don't know what year MO you have but I know on the 09's the auto climate control will automatically turn recirc off whenever it sees fit. You can manually override by turning it back on and it won't turn it back off again during that driving session. In other words, it won't override your override as long as the vehicle is kept running. The system resets whenever you restart the vehicle allowing the MO to turn recirc off automatically again. That's how it works on the 09's though. It could be different for the earlier model years.

In my 03 the system will be put into recirc mode when the cabin is extremetly hot and will put it back into recirc mode after the fan speed drops as the cabin cools down.

If you manually place it into fresh air mode (or recirc mode) it will remding there as longas you don't push the auto button, even if you turn off the car.

Also as a side note the system will put it in recirc mode when the oatside temp is very very cold (I don't recall excactly but around -15°F as I recall.) Someting you don't have to worry about in your area. :4:

Now the $100 question to all listening... asside from pushing the auto button or turning the climate system on/off after pressing the fresh/recirc button in an 03 what is another way to get the climate system back into this auto fresh/recirc mode? Anyone anyone?

I got the '04 se awd and it just bugs me when it switches over to fresh air mode. Wanna trap the cool air in is the idea. For the most part it stays in the recirc mode and I seldom use the auto. mode. I just dont know why it switches to fresh air by itself even when I am on the same run (not turning off the engine and starting it back on again). Maybe its got a mind/mood of its own. Will observe on it some more.
Thanks.

I don't know about "trapping in the cool air" as the car is designed to "vent" to the outside world regardless of the air selector.... I think if the car was air tight there would a rather large pressure difference, especially when on the highway.

I presonally like it on recirc, I find the cabin smells better and I don't get a mildew smell with the AC. About the only time I put it in recirc mode is if I'm behind a car with bad exhaust odor.

I remember someone posting that if you hit BOTH the recirc and fresh air buttons (maybe have to hold them down or something) it will put it back into auto mode.

gonzo,
Yeah I know what you mean. Thats how I used to set it when I lived in San Francisco---with 50s-60s year round and fog . Never even needed tha AC--only when going out of town. But with Vegas 110-120 degree temp. I realized that AC works better with the recirc. mode. Fresh air mode just brings in more hot air. Anyways, it does not happen way too often but enough for me to notice and gets me wondering why. Thanks.
