Leak, please help identify the location - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have discovered a leak this while changing the oil at a mechanic.
Here are pictures of the area which was covered in an oily substance.
there are several spots in the garage as well, as I notice now.
it is not oil for sure.
it looks colorless to me but can't tell for sure.

this area is located approx parallel to the center of the front wheels (front to back) and also right around middle of the car( left to right.)

please help!

Here is another picture.

the substance is on far right side of the picture, starting from the little hole and running along the rectangular portion.

What year is your MO?

From what I can see; it looks like the photo is of the CVT housing from the black drain plug I can see.

The CVT fluid is almost clear with a hint of green. You might be able to get an idea the colour by laying a flat paper towel on the drip of the floor and let the paper absorb the fluid. Then pick it up and have a look to see the colour against the white paper.

It might be a good idea to check your CVT fluid level by running the car in P and checking the CVT dipstick.

Let us know what you find....

ok, that's what the mechanic said when he saw it. i didn't mention it initially, simply because they don't work with transmissions and referred me do the dealer.
i was curious to see what you guys think.

i did check the CVT fluid level while at the shop, car on, in P. looked fine.

i will do the "paper test" to confirm.

assuming it is the CVT fluid leaking, and the level is so far ok, what should be the next step?

mechanic mentioned, that labor would be 99% of the cost here.

car is '03, has only 50k on it. SL AWD.

thanks.

ny941932-

What is the "in service" date for your MO?

The reason I ask is because, with any luck, it may still be covered by the 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

If I understand the "in service" date correctly, i.e. when I bought the car, then no luck there.
March '03.

I doubt they would cover it even under Good Faith Law.

thoughts?

HA!!! Are you kidding? A Nissan dealership do ANYTHING related to good faith?

Hard to tell without a wide angle shot, but that might be the seal between the CVT and transfer case. Get the seal replaced before there is more serious damage.
ny941932
What do you you think it might cost?

and assuming I check the CVT fluid level often and it's fine, what can happen?
ny941932
transfer box inner seal needs to be replaced.
$1,145 dealer's price.

won't cover under warranty, since it expired in March.

on the phone with Nissan consumer affairs now.

will post again later.

That's what I was afraid of. Good luck with Nissan Consumer Affairs. Don't forget to file a complaint with NHTSA - enough of those will prompt an investigation.

Call around to other (non-nissan) mechanics and see if they'll work on it. I know many shops still won't touch a CVT, but if it's a matter of just replacing the seal, some of them might do it a lot cheaper than the dealership.

Just make sure that they use the right fluid when they fill it back up. It's a special (and expensive) fluid that you need to get from Nissan. Make sure they understand this.

Nissan's answer: split the cost 50/50 = $475.

told them this is my 3rd Nissan, did maint. at the dealer, blah, blah, blah.

another update.

After having an extensive discussion with the reg. spec., he came back and cut the price in half again.

final cost -- $236.80

I think relatively, the guy did a great job. I repeat, RELATIVELY.

The seal is on order at the dealer, should be in next week.
I'm taking the car back for now, can't do without it.

All said and done, that was not a bad price to pay for an out-of-warranty repair.
