Cracked head gasket or engine block - Click HERE for Original Thread
Dr V
Well unfortunately I have been notified that my 2003 Murano SL AWD with 119,271 miles has a blown head gasket or possibly a cracked engine block. The problem was identified by Nissan techs, in collaboration with the national Nissan, and confirmed by a second indepenet shop that ran dye through the coolant system. Symptoms of the problem were a loss of heat when idleing due to air in the coolant lines even after multiple purges using a vacuum system.

It is 22hrs of labor to repair the head gasket or 26hrs to rebuild the engine at a cost of $3000-6000. Given the age of the vehicle I will be selling the truck to a mechanic that is willing to do the work and keep it for his wife.

Quite frankly I really did not expect this from a Japanese engine and Nissan corporate is unwilling to provide assistance. It seems to be a rare occurence since corporate had only a few reports of this occuring.

I am going to miss my Murano, but life goes on.

Good luck everyone and enjoy your Muranos.

Dr V-

I am sorry to hear about your tale of woe.

Other than the heating problem, did your MO start and run fine? Any concentrated white smoke from the tailpipe at start-up?

I find it very hard to believe that it takes 22 hours of labor to repair the head gasket, especially if they claim it only takes an additional 4 to rebuild the entire engine. :8:

It started and ran fine, just no heat. In fact it never overheated and the temp gauge never left the mid-point. There was some smoke at startup and the radiator overflow tank kept overflowing. Additionally, it was confirmed with a leak test that combustion gases were entering the coolant system, which can be due to a leaking head gasket or cracked engine block.

The hours of labor are because the engine must be totally removed from the vehicle to access the head gasket, so just to visually confirm a blown head gasket or cracked engine block would cost me $2500-3000.

You could always try Barrs Stop-Leak. I put that in a Plymouth with a leaking head gasket and it ran just fine for close to a year.
