CVT Vacuum Leak? - Click HERE for Original Thread
Paulius_D
Hi All,

We have a 2004 Nissan Murano which has just had the gearbox replaced. Yes the last one failed at around 40k miles, lots of crunching noises!!

Anyway Nissan has put one in and they cant seem to get it to work. Yes Nissan themselves, maybe bad mechanics? Car has been in their workshop for 2 months now.

Anyway when they get it all back in place (the gearbox) they are able to drive it for about 15 miles (all OK) until the car just stops, we are told the engine just switches off. There are comments its the vacuum pump or something. They then pull the gearbox out, clean it and again put it back in. They are up to 4th time now.

Has anyone experienced this and what was done to solve this problem?

Highly appreciate any feedback as this is costing me each day for car hire!

Regards,
Paulius

Paulius-

Two months?!? :3: Have they considered the possibility that the new CVT may be defective? How many more times are they going to reinstall the same problematic tranny?

Have you contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs to lodge a complaint? They can be reached at: 800- NISSAN-1 (or 800-647-7261).

Two months is way too long for a dealer to be working on a repair. Is all of this at least covered by any sort of warranty?

They are saying that there is no warranty so the bill is all mine. I am starting to think that the gearbox they have sourced is faulty too but they seem to not want to admit that but try to keep repairing it.

They said that they will be providing us a rental car but next week after having it for sooo long.

I am just wondering if anyone could think of what these symptoms are ie, they can drive for 15miles and then the car stops?

Maybe it is a heat-related issue. The CVT may be overheating and going in to limp-home mode to protect itself.

Thanks njjoe, thats sounds worth pursuing. I guess the way to check for this would be to run some temperature tests on the gearbox after it stops?

Maybe bypassing this "limp hime mode"? Can this be done? I guess the root of the problem is that it is overheating so I guess that again points to the gearbox..if this nis the case

Assuming it may be a heat-related issue, you can ask the mechanics if they cleaned the CVT heat exchanger located in the base of the radiator.

Nissan Service Bulletin #00-056b recommends that the transmission oil cooler be cleaned whenever a tranny is repaired, overhauled, or replaced.
