Hi everyone. This site has so many good posts. I read a bunch on Friday, but I didn't see what specifically happens if the transfer case fails? We've been experiencing the thud thud thud sound for maybe 4 months now. The one where the tire sounds flat but isn't. I do recall an oil burning smell when it first happened but nothing now. The thuds increase as the car increases speed and slow down with the car. Are we driving a car that is dangerous? We took it to a dealer in the Charlotte area and they were similar to the other dealers - they narrowed it down to the transfer case but without really knowing why. Any help is great
Here are the car stats:
Sound started at about 95,000 miles. Maintenance is superb.
Murano 2003 AWD
No fluid in the garage. |

| If they diagnosed the transfer case, they probably also know why - transfer case leaks are fairly common on Muranos and if you run that case dry, you are in for a large bill. Get it repaired before it causes damage to the CVT as well. |

| Can the seal on the transfer case be replaced without removing the entire engine & CVT? |

Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB07-019 has an updated procedure where they only need to remove the CVT and transfer case (not engine), but its still a lengthy procedure. The original transfer case removal/installation required 8-10 hours of labor. I expect almost the same even without removing the engine. |

| Is this covered under the Powertrain Warranty? I would imagine so considering it's part of the powertrain. |

Yes it would be covered under the 5 year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. |

Excellent! I know what I'll be doing when the end of the 5 years comes. I don't think I'll hit the 60k miles before the end of 5 years. |
