| I have been told by my Nissan dealer that I have a transmission leak at left axle seal in the 2003 Murano. I assume its the front axle since I have a FWD. Dealer will charge about $250 to replace seal. Is this something that can be done yourself? |

| yeah it can be done yourself. if you know how to use and have the proper tools. please dont raise the vehicle with the jack that comes with it. |

$250 is not a bad price for replacing the seal. The front wheel and half-shaft have to be removed in order to access the seal. I would have expected a dealer quote of at least twice that.
If you want to do it yourself, the service manual can be a big help. You can get a one-day online subscription for $20. Download all of the sections for future reference.

I need help understanding something. Is the axle seal located where the halfshaft exits the CVT? I have a leak there and assumed that this was a sign that the CVT was going bad.
Maybe my assumption as to where the axle seal is incorrect.
I guess I'm hoping this is something that can be repaired versus replacing the CVT.

Yes thats the axle seal. Get it fixed before the CVT actually goes bad. |

LKimura-
The leak, by itself, does not mean your CVT is "going bad". Just like an oil leak under the engine does not mean your engine is going bad. All it means is that your CVT (or engine) is losing vital fluid. The CVT fluid is used to lubricate, operate, and transfer heat away from, the internal components. The more fluid that is lost the greater the probability that damage to the internals will occur.
If the fluid leak was especially small you could probabbly drive for years before you caused any damage to the CVT. However, the sooner you replace the seal the better. Excessive fluid loss will most definitely damage the CVT.
