Thoughts about a Magnet bra. - Click HERE for Original Thread

I was wondering if anyone has had one. Knew someone that did etc.
I know the Clear 3m tape is best. However its kinda pricey.
Any advice on either would be ooo so great......

I had the Weathertech bug deflector, then switched to a Colgan full front bra. It looks great and is a perfect fit. I had a bra on my 97 Maxima for 6 years and never had single problem with paint fogging up, or scratches...etc.. If you take care of your car regularly a regular bra looks better than the magnet bra, and give better front area protection from rocks and dings.

lOTS OF POSTS ON THIS i HAVE THE BLACK mAGNETBRA ON A sILVER sl , AND i LOVE IT. $35 ON EBAY.
Sorry I have caps lock syndrome today!
Boobaba
The magnet bra is THE best. Low visibility, follows the contour of the
hood precisely, relatively cheap ($35-40 bucks) and very low
maintanance. go on eBay and take a look for yourself.
It really looks good. :26:
Specially on a Super black Mo.

I am confused...what exectly does the magnet bra protect? Just the front part of the hood right? What about the whole front of the car? I assume only the clear bra, or a full bra will protect right?
jammadave
all car bras mentioned, be they magnet, clear, leather or otherwise, will generally only protect the leading few inches of a hood, which is where debris impact is at the steepest angle and is most likely to damage the hood.

To do the whole hood with, say, ClearShield, well, it can certainly be done... I personally don't like the way the clear bra looks when you can see the trailing edge either from very slight lifting or by being dirty at that edge, but maybe "cellophaning" your whole front end would do the trick.
ekaxel
With my magnetbra, I see a lot of "hits" on the bra, and virtually none elsewhere.
jimthor
For those that have the Magnet bra. I am worried that it will slide etc and cause scratches etc to the hood.

Is this a valid concern?
dklanecky1
It won't slide at all assuming you have it nice and warm (and the car too) when you apply it. Mine has been absolutly perfect in protecting the hood for the first 15,000 miles and I only had one small problem with debris/water getting under it.

Like any bra, the car needs to be kept perfectly clean underneath the bra and a few good coats of wax will help also. I haven't used mine all winter just because it's too hard to deal with the differnet weather conditions here in Wisconsin.

I'll put mine back on here in the next week or two when the weather's changed for the season.
ekaxel
Mine has never slid. It fits perfectly due to the locking molding on the entire front edge. The wintertime (lots of cinders and gravel on Oregon roads) is the only time I need it!
jimthor
Thanks for the feedback. I would prefer the clear bra. However the cost is killer. SAT radio is my next item. :)
I take it everyone ordered it staight from the web site?

I am a real fanatic when it comes to car protection, so I suppose that I will get a Colgan Bra. I like the look of the Carbon Fiber 2-piece full model.

What is involved in the installation?
Pretty simple and straightforward?
Any chance of discoloration, etc. underneath?

Colgan site recommends removing the bra whenever wet to prevent clouding, and shouldn't be allowed to dry on the car.

Thanx!

I have had no problems with the Colgan bra. It fits perfectly. As for maintenance, I've had a Nissan bra on my 97 Maxima since new and rarely removed it unless I was waxing the car. Area underneath it never faded, or clouded. I think the key is keeping the paint very well waxed underneath, then you will not have to worry about the bra getting wet. Thats just my experience, but there are also those people who remove it all the time, which I think is an unnecessary hassle.
Dij
Eric,

I went to the Colgan site and found the various bras for the Mo, but the photos were of everything but the Mo. I was hoping you had photos of yours in the gallery.

I'm trying to decide between a bra and the WeatherTech bug/rock deflector. We get a lot of rain in south Louisiana and bras aren't very popular. I'm also not big on washing/waxing my vehicle. I'm afraid that a bra might not be a good choice for my Mo but it does offer more protection than the bug deflector.

Bug deflectors are a lot more common down here, and we do some some serious bug problems (the dreaded love bug) a couple of times a year. Rocks are not a big problem although I have gotten the occasional rock chip in the windshields of several of my vehicles. The bug deflector on my Xterra seems to do a good job of reducing the number of love bugs that get squashed on the X.

I just purchased the Magnet Bra off of E-Bay for $41.00 plus 9.95 Shipping. I also found the cost of the Clear Bra to be a little high at this time. So far I've put on the Rear Bumper protector, tinted the two front windows, and now purchased the Magnet Bra. I'm looking at the Nerf Bars as my next project.
Gonzo
Please post some pictures of the mag bra... from a far and close would be great.
SugarRushMurano
I bought thme around 2 months ago from ebay. So far it does the job. Why? Because i notice some light scratch on it, i think some chips or small stone hit the surface of the bra.

Anyway, for protection, it protects but not the entire front part of the murano. So if you can find a bigger 'bra' that will offer better protection, it will be a better comprimise. The 3M transparent bra are expensive indeed.

PERSONAL opinion:
Magnet bra will look better for a darker color murano. It does not really go well with light color.
CopperKat
It also comes in white.
CopperKat
The manufacturer also states that you can paint it to match the color of your car.
Jim C
Where did you guys order your Colgan bras? I checked the Colgan site (www.colganbra.com) and another place. Both sites note that bras aren't made for either the 2003 or 2004 Murano. For that matter, where can I get the magnet bra? There are none listed on ebay for Murano application. Thanks for the help. Still trying to decide on bra vs. bug deflector for the Mo that's on order.

Dij
Jim,

Go to www.colgancustom.com, choose "Buy Now", and you will be able to choose Nissan Murano. There are several different styles available.

The magnet bra can be purchased here

Jim C
Thanks guys!! Now I just need my MO to come in!! Dealer told me end of March originally. Now, he's saying mid-April. Since I ordered at the end of January, its still within the 3 month window that's typical for ordered vehicles. Still, its hard to wait!!!!
pcs15394
I'll post pictures as soon as I get the Bra and put it on. As far as not being on E-Bay, give it a day or two. There has not been a time that I checked Nissan Murano Accessories on E-Bay that I haven't seen one. In fact I did not win the bid for the Bra. The guy who was selling it offered me a second chance bid to buy it at my bid price , so I know he has them. I believe he is the same guy who runs the Magnetbra.com web site. If you happen to catch one at the Buy It Now price (Before anyone has bid) go for it, it's usually 39.95 buy it now price.
Dij
Jim,

By now, your dealer ought to have a "week of" delivery date. The two April dates I saw when the sales reps were searching for a car for me were April 15 and April 30.
Jim C
Thanks Dij! I'll e-mail the dealer. I sure as heck hope that I'm not getting the run around. I'll keep you posted.
Dij
Jim,

They can get info on deliveries up to 45 days out. If they don't have a "week of" by now, something's not right.
Jim C
Good info to know. Thanks. I e-mailed my sales rep and turns out he's on a "leave of absence for an undefined period." Another guy who I've met before is taking over. Good thing you got me off my kiester to check in with them instead of waiting until the end of the week as I had planned. The new guy who is the internet manager for the dealership is supposed to get back to me today with a definite date.
Dij
Jim,

I stopped by the dealership this afternoon and one of the guys there says that vehicles that are already sold when they are taken off the boat are often sent out first if possible, so they sometimes come in a week or two earlier than the due date. Hope that's the case with mine! Some arrive later, though.

Thought I was going to make a pattern for the cargo area protector but decided to wait until I can fit the thing to my Mo. I did see that it should be easy to make something that will stay in place and cover all the carpet in the back and that it will probably be in three pieces rather than just one. The vinyl that I picked up for $1.99/yd. is EXACTLY the color of the cafe latte interior. The only difference is that the cafe latte leather and vinyl are one color while the vinyl I bought is very subtley a combination of two slightly different shades. I couldn't have picked a better match if I'd taken a swatch with me! This was the only piece that was large enough, close to the right size, and looks nice, so I got lucky. My homemade cargo area protector will look like a factory option!
eager
Have you done a nose check on the vinyl some bulk material has such a potent smell when they are off gassing that it is hard to take in a confined space especially when the temperture goes up. If you are storing it rolled up you may want to unroll it and leave it in the sun to let the noxious gases out before you leave it in the vehicle .
Dij
eager,

Thanks for the warning. I'll do that when it dries out a bit (it rained last night). It's been in my warm house folded a bit but I can hang it on my wooden fence. Need to do that to let some of the fold marks fall out anyway, but may wait until I know the car will be here soon.
pcs15394
Magnetbra is being shipped, should have it by Tuesday or Wednesday and I'll post the pictures then.
Gonzo
Great thanks!
pcs15394
Got the Magnetbra on Monday but weather here had been cool . Needed a Semi Warm day to install. Today Got up into High 70's so I went for it.

pcs15394
Not so sure I like it yet. Maybe it will grow on me. First - For those who will be getting one, ensure you have a clean and waxed vehicle and allow both the Magnetbra and the car to warm up in the sun. I let the Magnetbra sit in the sun for 2 1/2 hours and treated it with 303 Aerospace protectant prior to install. When you install I found the easiest thing to do was to lay it across hood and get even overlap on both sides. After evening out, start on drivers side putting your overlap amount past the side of the hood, hold the passenger side material up off of the hood as you guide the bra making the adjustments as you go to ensure it is even with hood front. You are not supposed to drag this thing on your hood. I was able to even it out about an inch at a time until I had it even with hood front all the way over to passenger side. Smooth out any bubbles. Measure your molding so that it will be even on both sides, then start threading the molding onto the front of the hood starting in the middle. Molding goes under the rubber seal that is attached to the hood.
Gonzo
Pictures are a bit small to see good detail... what don't you like about it? Looks?
pcs15394
This may help:
pcs15394
It just seems to detract a little bit from the smooth lines of the hood. I think I'll leave it on during Spring/Summer when the bugs are really bad down here and maybe remove it in October after September Love Bug Season.
Gonzo
Is that foam around the front edges?
dklanecky1
No, it's not foam, it's a very hard U shaped rubber channel that actually feels like it has steel tire belt type material inside it for strength. I found this out accidentally when I decided to cut mine to fit exactly.

I actually didn't start applying the edging from the center of the hood as suggested, but went from one edge to the other and then I realized it should have been allowed to overlap a bit on each edge.

Don't cut the U shaped channel!
Jim C
Interesting look. What keeps it from being stolen right off the hood?
pcs15394
:8: Nothing except that channeled molding. I imagine if someone wanted to take, it would be up for grabs.
CopperKat
I removed the white "magnetbra" sticker from mine.
pcs15394
Thats probably not a bad idea. I've been meaning to tell you - Cool Avatar :18:
CopperKat
Who would want to steal it? It only fits the Murano.

pcs15394 - thanks. By the way, what does your name mean?
Jim C

True. But there are a big bucks in stealing vehicle specific parts and selling them. Afterall, there is a reason why the Toyota Camry is one of the most stolen vehicles in the United States - parts! It wouldn't be much of a stretch to imagine someone stealing something off a car that's easily lifted (like the magnetbra) and having that part offered for sale somewhere like ebay.
pcs15394
Jim C - What you say is all very true. I guess you just have to have some kind of Faith that it will be left alone. Not that I have much. I don't think there is much to stop anyone from stealing anything if they have a mind to do it.

CopperKat - My user name is just a combo of things that apply to where I work. I needed to come up with a name quickly at one time and found it to be unique and easy to remember.

Over the weekend I installed a carbon-fiber Colgan Custom 2 piece original bra. Pretty simple instructions to follow and took about 1/2 hour total.

I like the look. Nice contrast to my Polished Pewter. I already had an encounter with a cement truck that left me with ding in the right front bumper. The lower bra piece covers that up and protects me against further assaults.

Maybe I'll post a pic or two when I get a chance.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....looks like it covers all of the bits and pieces. Is it pretty snug?

That's gotta be one huge piece of material, the front end is rather large.
Jim C
KKKKEEEEWWWWLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!! I may have to change my mind about the bug/stone deflector! I'm also interested in how tight the Colgan is. I have had mixed results with LeBra on other cars (great for the Camaro - not so hot for the wife's minivan).
elliotgb
I can attest to the tightness of the carbon fiber model. It needed to sit in some warm sun for about 30 minutes prior to install.

It's an extremely well made product and is nice and snug, no vibrations or flapping as of yet.

I think it gives my MO a meaner look, too!

I'll work on getting some pix taken and posted.

I'm more interested in the protection quality rather than the appearance, based on my cement truck encounter. But I do like the look of the carbon fiber!

Yes it fits very tight. Better fit and quality than the OEM Nissan bra I had on my 97 Maxima. I've had the Colgan bra since Nov 03 and its been flawless.
dklanecky1
How does it attach at the wheel well?

My 00 Maxima SE Bra has plastic clips that have to literally be streched to reach past the edge of the wheel well and then just slip over the edge. Not really secure but better than the 95 Maxima.

On that one you had to remove screws in the wheel well and then replace them with snaps which of course rusted out after a few years making the bra pretty much worthless.

In that regard the OEM Nissan bras are better - they use the secure snap clips. Too bad nissan doesn't make a full bra for the Murano. The Colgan has plastic hooks which clamp around the wheel well. It is very secure though.

after i got a car wash i did a little inspection of the car, to my shegrin, i noticed that on the tip of my front hood it was chipped. THE PAINT WAS CHIPPED! i kept telling myself to get the bra, but i didn't think i needed it. boy was i wrong. well i ordered it for $34 off of ebay. but i was wondering, if i should touch up the paint on the hood before i put on the bra.

another note....anyone know of any cleaning solutions to help get off what seems like scratches on the paint? it looks like scratches but if i take some good ol fashion spit and use my fingernail it seems to rub off. i was thinking of getting a goo off solution. willl that ruin the paint?

A good cleaner wax should be able to buff those scratches out. I like Meguiars Cleaner Wax, although right now I am using Zymol.

You really can't take the magnet bra off without opening the hood.
Jim C
I ended up getting the Colgan bra thanks, in part, to Eric's convincing arguments! It is snug and much better quality than the Le Bra brand I had used on prior vehicles. The black felt-like material is sewn onto the entire underside, not just the edges. I got it for just under $100 delivered. Definitely a good compromise between price and protection - given that my first preference of the clear bra was $1000 installed! Yikes!!
Gonzo
Pictures?
pcs15394
The Colgan is probably a good choice as my MagnetBra vinyl that covers the actual magnet appears to be shrinking a little. It may be due to the extreme heat but I'm not sure.
Jim C
We're 90F plus today in the Mid-Atlantic and the Colgan seems fine. Had to head up to Baltimore yesterday for some business and the bra really saved the front end of the Murano from the darned cicadas buzzing around the parkway. Still got some bug guts on the hood and windshield. But again, it seems to help the front quite a bit. Here are some pics of the Colgan bra installed.

Congrats, good choice!

I would add that I had to unscrew the upper part of the front spray deflector to get the plastic clips in to the wheel well. The spray deflector bolted right on top of the bra from there. No biggie and extra assurance that the bra isn't going anywhere.

jaak
I like it, it looks hot. Makes you want to wear leather pants to go with it...:D

I like it! I had a bra on my previous car.... I always took it off when it rained and washed the car and then back on..... I like the protection... like the looks but hate the care associated with it.

I installed a MAG bra on My Pearl White MO a MAG Bra and it looks awesome... maybe i should say.:31: It's almost like it's invisible.. I think this is the best protection you can buy for your MO. The bra contours the hood very nicely and is sure not to move with a stip of rubber that contour the outer perimeter of the front of the Hood. Contrary to the traditional bras such as leather (immitation leather) , they do move and vibrate and eventualy wear the paint. I don't care how tight you put them on. It is a design flaw.. What's the point.. protecting the hood while the edges of your fender is being worn by your straps that holds the bra! The mag bra is simple yet efficient. inexpensive. Easy to install and remove, almost no maintenance. I bought one and i have experienced the clear(3M) tape and the leather ones and by far this is the way to go!
The Tape one is way too expensive and looks like your paint is faded and no shine..may as well sand it yourself.. :werd: I could compare it to people living with plastic covers over their furniture. Give me a break.

My 2 cents...:29:
dklanecky1
I think I might have been the first one with the original magnet bra and after 6 months of use, I decided to go with the colgan bra.

I was just getting too many small nicks below the hood line with the magnet bra only on top.

The colgan is an awesome design. It's literally less than a five minute job to put it on the MO. The magnet bra actually takes longer to get on, correctly, IMO.

It's my opinion that the vehicle is much better protected since it's so easy to take it off if you get caught in a rain storm or just decide to wash the mo, and it's just as easy to install.

It's well worth the money, IMO.

What do you all think about a WHITE MagnetBra on a Glacier Pearl SL?

Think it will look better than a BLACK MagnetBra?
MarkY
I don't understand the need for the rubber strip going along the front edge of the hood when using a Magnet Bra.

I have and use a magbra on my Porsche 911 and the only thing holding it on the car is the magnetic attraction to the car. I've driven well over 100 MPH with my magbra on and it has never moved or come off.

I can remove and install the magbra on my Porsche in less than a minute.

Why the rubber strip on the Murano?
ekaxel
Nothing, and I mean nothing, can get under the front edge with the strip installed. It guarantees a tight fit, and makes it much harder for a thief to remove.
pcs15394
The white Magnetbra would look much better on the Glacier Pearl Murano than the black. IMHO anyway.

I know this thread is old but I just wanted to say something about a pleasant recent experience I had with the company that makes the magnetbra
I bought my bra about two years ago. Just last week I noticed the top vinyl had a little bit of separation. I did not have any receipts or exact dates of purchase but I e-mailed them anyways.

The response I got back was so quick. Bob, I am assuming the owner, e-mailed me back and told me they indeed had a problem with one batch of raw material they used around that time. Although it was way outside of the normal warranty period, he offered to replace mine free of charge. Today I got the new one in the mail.

I cannot say enough about the way they interacted with me and took care of me. It is hard to find customer service like that these days.

So the bottom line is, not only do I highly recommend the magnetbra, but also highly recommend the company that makes it. They showed me they stand 100% behind their product and will make sure I stay happy.

gnotti211
Its good to find companies out there that don't give you some sort of hassle when you run into some problems with their products..

Buy anyway..I have had my MO since December this year and so far I cannot count the number of stone knicks i have..on my front bumper, my hood, and also my windshield...

I travel up and down I-95 for a good 20 minutes each day, so i can understand where i am getting them from..

I have a bug deflector and i am not that willing to purchase a bra because i believe that it takes away from the good looks of the MO..and the clear bra is sooo much money..is there any solution to this at all??

That is the beauty of the magnet bra. It covers the front of the hood only, where most of the damage occur. On a black MO it blends in very nicely, almost to the point that you can miss it if you don't directly look at it. I usually wax it up a little so it shines almost as much as the rest of the MO and because it is small enough, and thin enough, it blends in quite nicely with the rest of the car. Take a look at a few pictures I have in my gallery.
gnotti211
Z,

The magnetic bra looks great, but what advantage does it offer over the bug deflector that i already have?

Wonderfull for trapping dust underneath so the movement sands the paint off.

It looks like it fits very well, and with quality workmanship. As much as a Magnet Bra is slick and clean looking, overall I think the full Colgan bra would suit my needs better, especially in the prairies here...tons of bugs in the summer. :)

It would be nice to see that bra in carbon fiber...anyone have any pics?

Well this part is probably a matter of personal preference. They both look nice and serve the same purpose but on a MO, I like to keep the shape of the front intact. So (to me) adding a bug deflector there makes it look different. The bra on the other hand fits and follows the contours of the hood so it is not very visible and does not take away from the original shape.

That is true of any bra Don. But to my experience actulaly less of a problem with magnet bra because it does not move or flap after it has been installed. And if you wax the car real well and apply the bra correctly (and carefully) you will not have any issues. At least I don't!
GripperDon
I should have collected all cloth or other items that dust can collect under, turn to mud with rain or moisture and then get moved next to the surface of the car. This includes car covers.

It just my opinion that good HARD wax or the peel off clear protector are a better way to go.

I don't like bras on cars or women. :D

There are exception to all situations I just have not run into them. :D

Grip-

A proponent of braless?

You'd change your tune if you saw what I saw yesterday on the boardwalk. _:cool:_ There was this lady with an unbelievable "package". _:eek:_ She must have looked great in her 20's. Unfortunately that was probably back in the "roaring 20s". Not a pretty sight. It added new meaning to the term "tube top".:2:
