I don't know if the Public Affairs hearing into 'adscam' is officially closed but if it isn't the Liberals will no longer be able to control the committee agenda as they did when they had the majority of members on the committee.
Could become much more interesting especially since the Bloc would have more members on the committee and Quebec separation was the target of the advertising campaign that has since morphed into 'adscam' .
On a local talk radio show this morning the very first caller raised the subject of Alberta separation. This issue will pick up steam, particularly if the Liberals align with the Bloc in order to retain power. The West has just about had enough. |

EdMPT, the US started down that path a few years ago.
The public at large just gobbles up (and BELIEVES) anything that is titillating. Seems that over the past 20 years or so the US has been accelerating in a spiral of demanding entertainment and screaming for the government to take care of EVERYTHING.
Anymore, the word "reality" is just a categorical adverb for TV shows. And the public at large seems very happy to surrender every freedom in exchange for the perception of being safe.
Notice I said the PERCEPTION of being safe.
North Carolina's state motto, translated, says "To be rather than to seem".
Lately the entire country has adopted the inverse as its motto.

Honestly,
I used to be very proud to be an American. I thought we were the most righteous nation in the world. After the fiasco of the 2000 election, I decided to become more knowledgeable in the goingd on in our government. I have learned that most information we are fed is dramatized, out of context, or and outright lie. I guess nowadays it is much harder to discern the truth, from fiction. Still, I have become very dissappointed in the American Public, and the ignorance we display to a lot of wrong doings. I mean what is it? Have we become lazy and spineless that we don't stand up for what's right and fair? Or is it just people don't care anymore. I think most people are mislead wayyyy too easily, They are either are afraid to question what they are told, or are so caught up in the day to day grind that they don't have time to care. I know that is the case for myself most times. Or at least I think I am too busy. I suppose however, if I have time to read this forum everyday, then I most defanitely have time to be more involved in what is going on with our country and the world. So why don't I??? I dunno, maybe it's a question a lot of us should ask ourselves.... |

| People in our country have become fed up with politicians and the political process in general; not good. In our recent election, which was the first time in the last 10 years the outcome was uncertain, less than 60% of eligible voters participated; less than 20% in the age 18-25 category. Most people feel they can't make a difference. Politicians are perceived to be corrupt, incompetent, and untrustworthy. The winning Liberals were rated trust worthy by 17%, the 2nd place Conservatives 16%, and 3rd place NDP 8%; pretty pathetic! |

I saw a documentary once on why certain people are born leaders.
The one thing that stood out was the ability to lie with a straight face or no hint of the lie on their face.
It did not surprise me one bit. It seems that to succeed in politics, sales, as a lawyer and many other professions you must be able to not only lie with a straight face, but believe the lie.
The sheep of the world do dominate our world population. Unfortunately we must be ruled by who they vote for.
If Kerry wins here I’m not going to barf because it won’t surprise me one bit. He is a sheep herder.
It doesn’t thrill me to have a prez who makes cannon fodder out of his country’s youth to pacify his father’s past either.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that it took a freaking nut to rule a country of nuts…..the proof will be in the pudding in a year or two.

I must disagree with the previous post, no offense, but that is the blind gun-ho attitude that the world does not need right now. I don't disagree that something should be done about terrorism, that Iraq could've become a breeding ground for terrorism, but to say bush had the political guts to do what he did? I remember vividly during one of Bush's debates with Gore. Bush was repeatedly bashing Gore and Clinton about Somalia, which Gore admitted they made mistakes (that takes political guts), and Bush was adamant about him international policy would not include "Nation Building" like Clinton-Gore supposedly tried to do in Somalia. He got lot's of cheers from the crowds, however, just what the heck are we doing in Afghanistan and Iraq? Certainly not making the world a safer place.. and looks like a whole lot of Nation Building to me.
As for Mr. Moore, I saw the movie, and certainly there is a huge amount of poilitcal bias, and there was a lot of stuff that I thought was blown out of proportion. However there are many things in the movie like the President's immediate reaction to the the trade center crashes. We are not being led by a good man, an intelligent man, an honest man, and most defanitely not a competent President, nor is most of his cabinet...he may be clever, humorous, and maybe even personable, but those are not the qualities that make a good leader.
I wish this whole republican, democrat thing could be eliminated and the best person could be elected...

Do some research.
I did, and it was fascinating. And after doing all that research, I come away extremely impressed with Teresa Heinz-Kerry's compassion and generosity.
Rather than just blindly believing the crap spewed forth by the radical right-wing wackos who proliferate the airwaves and the internet on the subject of the Heinz foundations' contributions, I took a look at the Heinz foundations' annual reports to discover exactly where the foundations sent their money. And then I took a further look at those organizations to find out what they do. I have concluded that, at best, the right-wing wackos have intimated a "six degrees of separation" connection between Teresa Heinz-Kerry and radical extremist groups like Hamas. In other words, there's no connection at all, and what's "reported" is nothing more than ultraconservative hysteria and lies designed to destroy an individual whom they perceive as a threat.
The wackos note that the Heinz foundations have given large sums of money to the Tides organization. They claim that Tides is a charity that allows contributors to hide money they want to give to organizations when they don't want the connection known publicly. Tides, in turn, funds a wide variety of organizations, most (if not all) of which support traditionally liberal causes. The wackos claim that some of the things Tides funds are extremist groups tied to Hamas, etc. While I wasn't able to find such a direct link in my research, it's certainly possible that Tides does, indeed, provide money to such organizations. What the wackos don't tell you, though, is that the Heinz foundations' money doesn't fund such causes.
While Tides does allow anonymity for some of its contributors, not all contributors to Tides choose to be anonymous. The Heinz foundations' contributions are not anonymous and are clearly spelled out in their annual reports. For example, in 2002, $200,000 was given to Tides to help fund the Cool Space Locator Project, which undertakes the revitalization of the urban areas of Pittsburgh, eliminating the abandoned buildings and bringing more people and businesses to the inner city. $60,000 was given to Tides for the second phase of the Youth Standards initiative, which was aimed at improving the quality of services for young people age 11-19. $100,000 was given to Tides to fund the Sprout Fund, which funds initiatives by young people who want to improve their communities. $250,000 was given to implement the WorkKeys testing in the high schools of Pennsylvania, which helps students to acquire the skills (reading, writing, math, problem-solving, communications) they need to get jobs. $150,000 was given to Tides for the Pennsylvania Biodiversity Partnership, which helps to preserve the natural ecosystem of Pennsylvania. Another $600,000 was given to Tides for the Southwest Pennsylvania natural amenities and green infrastructure plan, another environmental cause. And then I saw a contribution that surely had to be a sign of subversive activity. The Heinz foundations gave $15,000 to the Pittsburgh Chess Club.
Out of all that I researched, I found only one contribution from the Heinz foundations to an Islamic group. The Islamic Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh was given $75,000 to match a federal grant so that they could provide substance abuse treatment programs to Muslim youth. Yep....there's your subversiveness!
So, it appears that Teresa Heinz-Kerry has been directing the Heinz foundations to support such awful things like the arts, the youth of Pennsylvania (and the country), education, economic opportunity for underprivileged people, and the environment. How terrible of her! She should be ashamed!
I am thankful that I had this opportunity to research Teresa Heinz-Kerry. She seems to be a bright, intelligent, caring, compassionate, and outspoken woman who would make an excellent First Lady. My research also showed the lengths to which the right-wing wackos in the US will go to destroy those who don't march in lock-step with them. They, not Teresa Heinz-Kerry, frighten me the most.

As a teen, I discovered through short wave radio how many different view points there are in the press and how twisted they can be, depending on the country you are in.
One thing I missed while travelling in the U.S. was Canadian TV stations, as in Toronto we get both Canadian and US stations, so there was always two different country views.
An example of how twisted things can be, I was flipping around on XM trying to find the World Cup soccer game between Greece and Portugal. This truly is a World event, as countries from around the globe compete in a truly global match. It got me thinking about things that we enjoy, that have such impact in our sports world, such as the "World Series" in Baseball, where two countries that have teams, compete.
Anyway, I went through all the sports channels trying to find this truly global event and couldnt' find it on one of them. However, I finally did find it... On the BBC World Service.
So yes, our press truly does twist the world and present it with a view that they believe will get us to listen to them, not one that is representative of the world the way it is.
That reminds me... I've got to put up an antenna again and drag out the short wave receiver.:D |

Gee, I wonder if you guys are democrats?
First of all I must say that I am not a “republican” so your insinuation of my ignorant republican ideals is false. My political views more revolve around reality, not a blind party agenda. But, in my take on things, the republicans are a lesser evil. Sure, republicans have made mistakes, as democrats have. My wish is for total party affiliation to drop as soon as any elected official attains office. We spend to much time defending party affiliations. But, alas, my first statement in this rant points to a more basic problem in the human mind—our gullibility.
But it seems you must task me to find a real unadulterated account of a subversion tactic in regards to Teresa’s dealings in the democratic machine.
Recently Teresa has decided that she is “African American”. After speeches where she claimed she has her "roots" in Africa, many African-Americans had a nasty taste in their mouths from such a label. In defense of her label, a representative of hers said that people should take note that she does not use the hyphen......oh dear, just how would you put a hyphen in an audible phrase? Maybe you should dig back to that place to find out how much she has helped Mozambique, the country of her birth. They have a bitter taste in their mouths for her there. Where is the money for Mozambique, her birthplace?
Pffffft.
If you haven’t noticed, the lion’s share of her “directed” money has gone into Pennsylvania, which just so happens to be where the roots of the Heinz family is from. So, these “roots” she uses in her campaign to get the African-Americans to vote for her husband don’t seem to go so deep do they?
In defense of Teresa the human, it is sad that she will have to be subjected to the political machine she married into. Democratic ideals in this country are tied to subversive tactics more than any republican’s initiative. I did research myself and I would have to say that the Hienz Foundation endowments have been noble in their dealings with Pennsylvania society. I don’t think that is Teresa’s agenda, it is the Heinz family endowment, one she married into before Kerry.
It is common knowledge that the news machine in the USA is pro democrat. One of the reasons is that controversy leads better than anything else in the news. Unfortunately most humans would rather hear about trauma than healing. It would be interesting to see which party the vast majority of persons creating this trauma lean towards……
Correct me if I am wrong, but, Bortz is not a republican “whacko”. He calls himself Libertarian. He finds problems on both sides, more the democrats than the republicans. That is his trip and I am not a fan of his. I don’t listen to talk radio, I listen to music and most of it is on CD.
Unfortunately people have to vote for a lesser of two evils most of the time. I am too disgusted with the way in which the democratic ideals have screwed up my individual life in its present, and how it will affect the future of my children, to even venture a glance in their direction.
I won't comment any more on this thread, politics have emotionaly charged statements in their discussion and implications can be taken when none are meant. I wish not to anger anyone here on an electronic forum or in my life. Considering that most of us (per the poll) are engineering or software authoring individuals, I expect that we have the brains not to let extreme right or left agendas persuade us to make an incorrect judgement.
Peace |

Mgthe3, before you edited and reposted your reply, you accused me of putting words in your mouth. You were wise to delete that line, as I did nothing of the sort. You were the one who proliferated a false accusation against Teresa Heinz-Kerry, and I simply debunked it.
Unfortunately, you continue to try to defame Ms. Heinz-Kerry with half-truths and outright lies perpetrated by the radical right. You try to distance yourself from the wackos of the right wing, but the accusations you hurl are straight from the wackos' websites.
When you try to connect her financially to Hamas through the Heinz foundations' contributions to Tides, you say she's responsible for where the Heinz foundations' money goes; but, when proven wrong, you backpedal and praise the work of the Heinz foundations and then say that Ms. Heinz-Kerry has little to do with where the money goes. You can't have it both ways, my friend.
You then try to make an issue out of the fact that she directs the Heinz foundations' money to Pennsylvania causes rather than to her birthplace of Mozambique. The most intelligent response I can give to that little gem is, "well, duh!" From the website for the Heinz foundations: "Our shared mission is to help southwestern Pennsylvania thrive as a whole community—economically, ecologically, educationally, and culturally—while advancing the state of knowledge and practice in the fields in which we work." Seems like she's doing her job just as she should.
Should she call herself an "African American" (without the hypen)? The wackos seem to think she's just pandering to the African-Americans in this country. The fact is that she was born and raised in Mozambique, which just happens to be in Africa. She has as much right to call herself African or African American (with or without the hyphen, as far as I'm concerned) as anyone, and she has addressed this issue to the satisfaction of everyone except, it seems, the right-wing wackos.
You say that it is common knowledge that the media in the US are pro-Democrat. It's common knowledge only to the right-wing wackos. With Limbaugh, Boortz, Savage, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, Snow, and a host of others locally and nationally spewing forth their ultraconservative views on the TV and radio airwaves and in print and with the majority of newspaper editors and publishers being conservative, the "liberal bias" in the media is clearly overstated.
If you are truly as nonpartisan as you want to portray yourself, I would encourage you to expand your sources of information and to stop proliferating the lies of the conservative wackos whose intent is to defame a decent individual. I, too, would like to think that we're smart enough to see through the lies that seem to be part and parcel of American politics these days. My fear is that there is a significant portion of the voting public that buys into the lies and lets others do their thinking and analyzing for them.

I never said that I was a nice guy....although I am.
It's not as simplistic as you are trying to make it. I never said that individuals were "wackos" just because I disagree with them. I used the term "wacko" to describe those who deliberately present lies as if they were facts primarily for their own gain. I find the efforts of the radical right in this country to defame their opponents reprehensible, and I think it tells us all we need to know about their lack of character, their lack of a sense of fairness, and their inability to debate the issues on their own merits. Yep, I think it's pretty wacky to deliberately lie about your opponents, and I don't think I'm stepping too far out on a limb with that belief.

What I find fascinating is the fact that you come into this thread and intentionally spread rumors (not once, but twice!) about the wife of a prominent politician in the US and then have the nerve to get huffy with me because I expose those rumors to be lies. Predictable, as far as the current state of political discourse is concerned, but fascinating nonetheless.

I'm sure everyone remembers 'I never had sexual relations with that woman' and everyone knows what would have happened to that woman had there not been a blue dress.
You used all the right words (reprehensible, lack of character, lack of a sense of fairness ...) but attribute them to the radical right when you could just have easily attributed those same characteristics to mainstream Democrats.
I don't care whether you are left or right on an issue the fact remains that there are those who will 'spin' to support or attack your position. If you think that your 'side' speaks the 'truth' and doesn't 'spin' you are sadly misinformed. |

This reminds me of Amateur Radio where the three things you avoid are swearing, sex and politics. Do that and everyone gets along famously, bring one of those into the mix and there's always differing opinions.
While I don't trust any of them, at least I'm happy we do have some limited power to control their careers, so I always vote, even if it's just a vote against who I can't stand the most, instead of for someone who inspires. Although on occasion, a few sneak through that are actually doing a good job. So I tend to vote for the individual, not the party.
And we have the freedom to talk about it!:D Not something every country has... |

I certainly agree with you. I never said that the left side of the aisle is the path to truth and righteousness. The discussion, however, was not about the Clinton administration. If you'd like to open up a discussion about the Clinton administration, feel free to start that thread.
I will say, however, that the majority of conservative talk show hosts I've listened to do, indeed, claim to be the only ones telling the truth. Bill O'Reilly and his "No Spin Zone." Rush Limbaugh calling himself "America's Truth Detector." Yes, I think they are sadly misinformed.

Big business is made of all kinds of people just like you. Some conservative some liberal, some criminal. The big business that gets taken down or hit by torte lawyers and their covetous juries in selected hi-$$$ areas affects more than the CEO.
As a small business owner (7 people) trying to keep my head above water for the past 5 years, I could easily employ another person with a break on unemployment ( up 10x over the previous year), and taxes. If I was just allowed to save or invest the ridiculous amount I pay in Social Security, I could be self-sufficient at retirement. Unfortunately many citizens in our Country have gotten lazy, and feel entitled to things that previous generations had to work their back-ends off to get. In order to "even" the playing field we see this redistribution which just means less private sector jobs, and more Government dependence. Some things really are black and white.
While I am on this diatribe, I am ashamed at many in this country for being so lazy about their freedom and from where it came. The men that fought the revolutionary war were defending against things that we have come to accept or embrace. The WW II generation (those that remain) are sickened by the PC approach with an enemy that has no rules.
The media tries to draw similarities, or focus on prison abuse in contrast to an absolute enemy who decapitates citizens and publicly declares "convert or die" while we try to bring freedom to the oppressed and watch the supposed "human rights" activists make statements comparing our President to Saddam (maybe they should tour the mass graves or visit those with limbs removed under that regime)?
If its all big business and big oil, we could have nuked and taken that? If you dig a little you will find the "Money for Oil" program the only secret dealings on that level. A major witness on the matter was murdered last week, and the list of beneficiaries from this scandal includes our "allies" in France, Germany and Russia. Now there is your conspiracy. |

Speaking for myself, and not the Forum, I have absolutely no problem with people voicing opinions. It is in the off topic area so I'm fine with that.
As long as no one takes opinions personally or attacks another's opinions in a personal manner, I don't have any issues with the thread. We all choose to respond or ignore each thread, so when you step in it, remember you stepped in it!
But I'm also fine if it's determined that the thread, while interesting, isn't really relevent to the forum and isn't needed.
I have to say, I have been and continue to be impressed with the level of intelligence and maturity of Murano owners! And I do think it's great that we can talk as a community outside of just Murano topics. After all, we have to a certain extent, become friends, many of us, and the Forum is a meeting place of sorts.
So Senza, don't sweat it, I figured I had to watch the thread when I saw you first post it, but I've not had any complaints about it... There's nothing wrong with posting it. It's just one of the topics that is guaranteed to spark many varied opinions! |

Dennis,
Thanks for the ”congratulations’….
Actually, I do believe that anything can be discussed. However, the key is that is has to be done in an intelligent manner. I have seen too many “personal” attacks and arrogance simply to mask lack of knowledge and intelligence.
One of the greatest achievement of the democracy is the freedom of speech. But at the same time one cannot forget about responsibilities. The same way as democracy cannot be mistaken with anarchy.
I have elected not to fight wars that I cannot win, meaning I do not discuss certain topics in certain places (and with certain people). It is not worth it as what ever you say will be either misunderstood or twisted. Religion, politics, race, family, etc. tend to generate the kind of discussions that go off the “bitten track” very easily. Better leave them to politicians.
If you wish we can discus whatever you wish, but not on a public board like this……….
As to the administration – why not to discuss it. As long as the discussion remains at a professional level.
I think that the members of this board are the greatest bunch of people I have met. It is rare that you see such a professional level of discussion and behavior and fun all mixed up together.
HATS OFF LADIES AND GENTELMEN!!!!

| Nissanlove - keep that oil pumping,baby,....I guess you Albertans don't mind the high gas prices when a big chunk goes into the provincial coffers....is "King Ralph" going to lose the next provincial election? Some think he's "losin' it" eg his ill timed comments about changing health care a few days before the federal election...a major reason the Conservatives lost.... |
