Leather Gear Shifter is Pealing - Click HERE for Original Thread
FlyerNo9
Now that the St. Louis humidity is setting in I've noticed the leather on my gear shifter pealing off. Now I do like to drive with my hand on the shifter [used to have a stick] but don't think the leather should be pealing off after 1 year.

I showed to to my dealer while in for an alignment this week. They went on an ordered a new shifter and said they had no reason to believe it wouldn't be covered under the warrenty.

If I have some time in between dirty dipers I'll take and post some pictures.

Oh man, for some reason that latte leather color looks like human skin.. and the peeling looks like a nasty GOUGE of a wound... eww
FlyerNo9
that's exactly what I said to my wife and the dealer.

my wife was like... 'well you know leather is skin'. she's so funny.

still waiting for the new shifter to come in.

Hey Flyer - Did the dealer seem like he had many of these happen before, or did he seem like he was surprised to see it happen ??

Anyone else had this problem ?
FlyerNo9
No, he didn't act like many people have complained about this.

He did though act like it wouldn't be a big deal to replce it... we'll see about that.

My MO's shifter is wrinkling up like yours and feels a bit rough on one side already. I have driven about 13,000kms but I don't drive with the hand on the shifter.

And my steering wheel airbag cover has discolored already.

I have a habit of keeping my hand on the shifter and had been afraid this might happen. I will keep an eye on mine.

Do you believe the shifter is made of real leather ? Maybe if we would keep a leather conditioner on the shift, it would be okay ? Has anyone had problems with the seats "peeling"
FlyerNo9
That leather is so thin i think a conditioner might hurt it even more.

Has anybody seen any aftermarket shift knobs for the MO?
jaak
Ouch! I hope my knob doesn't peel like that!:D
FlyerNo9
just keep the conditioner on it and everything will be ok :-)
midnitexpress
we're still talking about the Gear Shift Knob correct? 0:-)
jaak
Uh yeah, but if you want to see a different knob, here's one...

The Strike is over!!! The mechanics have gone back to work and I finally got my NEW gear shifter installed... under warrenty.
