Muth Signal Mirrors Group Buy - Click HERE for Original Thread
dklanecky1
OK, it looks like we're getting close to putting together a group buy on the Muth Signal Mirror Kits from Muth Signal Mirror. The only installed kit on the planet is in my Murano (pictures are in my Gallery) and I really like them a lot.

The regular retail on the kits is $219 for unheated mirrors and $269 for heated mirrors. (This looks like the normal pricing on their web site.) It also looks like the group buy price would be about 15-20% off the regular retail.

(I think they'll go with the 20% off, depending on how many orders we get.)

The instructions for installation will be made available for review prior to ordering so you can all see what your getting involved with (or your local shop who'll do the work) installing them.

It looks like we'd have a set window to place orders (say for example a 30 day window) which is how they'll get around their normal pricing by calling it a pre-order period.

Who's interested at these quoted prices (less the 20%)?

Why are the stick-ons $22 on ebay? Do they peel? Short out? Just suck in general? Is this kit really worth 10x as much (and losing my heated mirrors?)
dklanecky1
Eastern, you don't lose your heated mirrors, (as long as you buy the heated mirror kit). The heated portion doesn't extend under the LED's, so the very outside edge of the mirror isn't heated.

We haven't had a real hard frost here yet where my mirrors were completely iced up yet, so I don't know precisely how far out to the edge that they'll work.

This company makes only this product line (at least I think that's all they do) and seem to be pretty successful at it. There is a market for the product, and apparently at the regular prices of $269 and $219.

If it's not for you, then it's just not for you.

That's why I included all the various choices in the poll.

These guys were nice enough to install a set of the mirrors on my Murano for nothing as long as I served as the test vehicle so they could determine how difficult it would be to get them installed by the average owner.

That said, after having them and driving with them for a few weeks, I'd buy a set if I didn't already have them.

As to the price of the stick ons at $22, well I guess you get what you pay for.

I know this is a stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway. I am willing to pay the price for the heated mirrors, my only problem is I have a base Murano without the heated mirrors now. Will I be able to install the heated mirrors on a Mo without that option originally??
My concern is the Muth mirrors may only have wiring to connect to the Murano's with existing wiring for the heated mirrors. If I cannot get the heated ones I would still be interested in the non-heated, I just prefer heated.
dklanecky1
I was kind of waiting for this question to be asked!

I have no idea on whether or not the heated mirrors could be added to a MO that doesn't have them before hand.

I would suspect that the answer is yes, because it's just an electrical hook-up that's active when the defroster is in the on position but I really don't know if the connector is already in the wiring harness or not.

I sent Chris at Muthco your question in an e-mail and asked him to see if he could get an answer.

Since my TEST MO had the heated mirrors already, they may need one without the heated mirrors to really answer the question.

We'll see.

Here's the answer:

Last I heard from Chris at Muthco was they were developing the instructions first (trying to get them done before Christmas) and would finalize pricing (discounts, etc) shortly after that.

If you guys want to keep in contact with Chris at Muthco directly, it maybe more effective than trying to go through me. I'm really busy now and don't see the work load lightening up until 12/23.

I had 275 new posts to review when I logged in this morning (in a quiet moment).

Thanks for taking the time to help. That answered my question perfectly. Sorry I should have posed the question to Muthco directly. I will have to buy the HMOD option along with the mirrors.

The whole project (including documentation) took them 4 hours.

WOW! I am afraid I am leaning toward the wireless installation units.

Dear Dale,

Thank you for your inquiry!

We are hoping to be able to release the Murano Signal Mirror® kit in the next few weeks. I know there is a poll currently running on the Murano web forum about a group buy and once I get a firm date, I will advise Doug and we'll provide the details of the group buy.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me directly.

Well ther are 7 months late but worth the wait. Very easy to install. the system contains a test lamp, a backup charger, 2 turn signal mirrors, a transmitter, and some misc. supplies.

Very easy to install, Only 3 wires to connect and nothing to do with mirror replacement. I put the transmitter in the felt side trunk, cubby. Connected the right and left turn wires at the turn signal lamps behind the rear tail light housings, Attach the ground wire no hot lead required..

Switched on the units, test Voila they worked great. Stick them inplace and away we go!

They even supply a backup connector to a cigarette lighter in case you park in a completely dark garage for 6 weeks continously. Or just move into the sun light for 15 minutes.

Nice and bright from the rear and just right at the driver and passenger seats.
No impact on the turn signal frequency. There is a group buy discount for the Murano Board, as detailed above.

The pictures of the install are in my Gallery

What do you see when there is a mirror on a mirror? For example, if there is a car beside you, and you look out the side mirror, do you see two cars?

I have two mirrors so I can speak to this. You see two images but their sizes are different so your eye can focus on either image independently. I look at the big mirror to see the side of the car, and then focus on the little mirror to see if anything is right next to me. It also comes in handy when parking as you can almost see your wheel against the curb!

Can you take some pictures... maybe of the drivers view looking at the mirror and what you see?
Eric L.
Maybe I am just confused here (did I just say maybe? :D) - but the pictures Grip posted appear to be a stick on type mirror and different from the original pictures earlier in this thread (which showed a complete mirror with LED arrows embedded on the left side).

Are there two types of Muth Signal Mirrors?

Oh never mind. They are two different types. I do not think Muthco makes the wireless kind but a google search revealed the other brand Grip installed.

If you go to this web site (the link works now!)
www.autocareproducts.com

you can see what it looks like better than I can take picture or describe.

All I can say is the total ease of installation is a matter of minutes. That is what makes this so appealing to me. Click click and it's done. I did it while waiting for "Grippee" to get here hair and makeup on.

I just love them at night, I have tinted tails and with these, my intentions are very clear to anyone behind. They work like a charm and having the extra wide angle rear view provided by the supplemental mirror is an added safety plus.

I really like having them them, and the stick on tape they supply is industrial strength. Don't have to worry about theft. Not sure any one would know what they were just parked anyway.

Affordable and quick, I have never had to recharge them the "Sun" seems to do the trick. Toook a long time to get them but it was definately worth the wait.
Carman Murano
After successfully installing Sirius SAT radio on my '03, I decided to get daring and install the signal mirrors too. I purchased the Muth Signal mirrors for the Murano last week (10% discount for the month of July). Anyway, they arrived on Friday, and here's my dilemma. I attached the driver side mirror with no real issues except finding the correct wires to attach was quite a challenge. I went to install the passenger side mirror only to discover that one of the screw heads to be removed from the bottom of the mirror was basically stripped. I cannot get it to budge, and I don't want to make it worse. The three screws need to be removed to disassemble the mirror to feed the new wiring through.

Any suggestions on how I remove the stripped screw?
CopperKat
Sears sells a damaged screw remover set. It's called "Screw-Out". It's about $20 for a set of three bits. From what I've read, it works on about 75% of stripped screws. May be worth a try. You can return it if it doesn't work.

Any nicer mirrors available. Any BMW style mirrors available. The ones with thw led facing oncoming traffic.

Can you elaborate? I really want to do this, but I'd like to make sure that I can really do it myself. Also, on another thread people were under the impression that you had to drill a hole in the vehicle, but I don't see that you have to on the instructions. You're removing a plug, and going through an existing hole.

One more thing, I found a source that sells the signal mirrors for $185.00 shipped.
Carman Murano
Well, today I can claim success on a couple of fronts! I finished installing the Muth mirrors that I started last week. I had a difficult time with a stripped screw in the passenger side mirror. Bought the tool at Sears which did the trick quite simply. The passenger side went much smoother than the driver side since I was on the "learning curve" with the driver side install. It was interesting fishing the wire to the driver side, but since I recently installed the Sirius radio, it wasn't too difficult. I do caution that you have to be carefull when removing the trim around the door handles. I broke one of the clips. Also for some reason the remote mirror on the passenger side is not working. Don't know why. I double checked the connection and all appears fine. I'll ask the dealership to check it out next time I take it in for service.

Today I also picked up a new 2006 Infiniti M35. We're keeping the Murano, as I don't dare part with it now that I've done these recent upgrades. Need to sell our Honda though.

CopperKat, the install wasn't all that difficult. The biggest problem I had was dealing with the Florida heat/humidity.
GripperDon
Tell us about the Infiniti M35, What packages did you get? How do you like it, What color is it? We need all the scoop.

M35

Isnt it cool to have money. One day ill get there.
Carman Murano
Don,

The M35 is probably THE nicest car I've owned. Reminds me a lot of my old GS300 I used to have, but has more toys on it. I got a RWD with Journey, Technology, Splash guards, full size spare and trunk mat. It's Diamond Graphite with Graphite/rosewood interior and is gorgeous...not to mention fun to drive. The push-button start is a very cool feature as is the backup camera. Unbeliveable vision even at night. Needless to say, I DON'T have to install my own Sirius SAT this time. I was going to get the AWD model, but don't really feel the need here in Florida. Not that many on the lots here either. You wouldn't belive the size of the owner's manual. It doesn't fit in the glove box which is a pretty decent size.

Anyway, thanks for letting me share. I've got lots of reading to do!

He is 50% older than you and close to 300% more workiing time. Don't worry you'll get there. Just keep: learning & studying stuff, working hard, spend, save and invest wisely. :)

I got the wireless signal mirrors Dan turned us on to and installed them last October. The installation was easy and they worked great for a couple of weeks.

Then we had a series of torrential downpours, and water got in both units, wrecking them. The company was great about it: they replaced them immediately and explained that there had been a change in the manufacturing process designed to eliminate the problem, and further, that a wholesale redesign of the units was underway (I believe they are now shipping).

Installing the replacements was simple -- the most difficult part being getting the original mirrors to peel off. That took 80% of the 10 minutes I spent on swapping them out.

Now that I have had working items for three months, I can say that they make a great accessory for the car. The only drawback is that when you live up north -- and I'm in Vermont -- there is a tendency to miss sunshine opportunities and the batteries run down (because the units are solar-powered). Trickle-charging from the cigarette lighter power points is nowhere near as effective as sunshine.

So now I have a tendency to try to locate parking spots that are going to stay in the sun when I am out and about, and, when they aren't working because the battery is down, accept that as one of the downsides to having the car in the garage during the winter and not being a regular commuter who is out everyday (I do software development and my commute is by foot down the stairs to my home office).

On the whole I give the units a big thumbs up.
