On the Standard Equipment list for my 2004 SL under exterior features it mentions it has Dual Heated Mirrors, does anybody know where the switch is to turn them on. I can't find it and I can't find anything in the owners Manual and its just one of those things that I keep forgetting to ask the dealer about. I really could have used them the last couple of days we've had nothing but ice rain:3:
FlyerNo9
My 1999 Grand Cherokee has heated mirrors. They turn on when I turn on the rear defroster.

Maybe that's how the Murano's turn on too.

Yes, you are spot on!
special-k
I wonder if my SE has them?

Is that standard on all 2004s or just part of a certain package, like leather, which I didn't want?
special-k
Well according to the Nissan web site, on the 05s at least, the heated mirrors are part of the Touring Package... which I don't have because I didn't want leather seats.... oh well. :cursin:
Kris
I wanted VDC. Dealer did not have it in stock, so I went with.............winter package - heated seats, heated mirrors. No regrets so far......:D

Again... was only available with leather.

I wish more options were available with cloth interior. Some of us don't LIKE leather interiors!! Why should we be punished!!!! Why?!?!? Whyyyyyyyyyy?!?!?!?

The heated mirrors come on when the rear defrost is activated.

:D
Gonzo
Funny I was just thinking about that the other day... I wish my 03 had them... I could have used them.
ADV
Its a feature that is rarely used but when you need it you need it. I still remeber chipping off layers of freezing rain with a credit card with my old honda. Heated mirrors/seats are standard in Canada.

:1:
all4me
Yes, It's true... When you have your rear defroster on it also turns the heat on the mirrors. The only time that I have used it is from my garage at home to the garage at work. When I pull in to the garage, the mirrors fog up !! Unless if I have the mirrors heated. Good Luck.

Has anyone considered a mod for those of us without the heated mirrors? Slapping on a set of mirrors either bought from Nissan OEM or e-bay or what-not? I can't imagine it would be that hard, just run the appropriate wiring through the existing channels and tap it in at the appropriate place for the rear defrost switch to activate?

Maybe? Maybe???

You may not even have to run any wiring. I have an 04 without heated seats or heated mirrors but when I was relocating the AWD lock and mirror adjustment switches I realized the car was prewired for heated seats! Had the wire and the connectors right in there but of course no switch. I bet the mirrors are also prewired for the heat.
GripperDon
You only have to buy the actual mirror replacement part not the whole mirror. There are two little connectors sticking out of a hole near the edge of the mrrror portion.

Good to know! I wonder how much the mirror part with the heating element costs...
Gonzo
I would like to know as I might be interested in getting replacement mirrors too.
GripperDon
Glass $20.63 no heat. $49.60 with heat, list price Nissan
MVTCFP
OK.

Sounds like we need a mirror crash test dummy.

If this mod is as simple as replacing the mirror glass and plugging in a few wires, and the parts are $100....

How can we confirm all this????

OH JAAAAAAKKK.........

(fingers crossed hoping Jaakk does not currently enjoy heated mirrors)
GripperDon
We don't know for sure the wires are there to plug into the mirrors. Someone without heated mirrors (not me, I have them) needs to remove the mirror glass and look.

Well, I had to know. So when I got home tonight I pulled off the mirror to see if a pre-wire might exist. I have an '03 without the Cold Package and a build date of 07/03. I didn't find the little black wires that would be necessary. But, as mentioned by Special-K, I don't think it would be that difficult to run the wires if you bought the Nissan or Muth Signal Mirror replacements. I guess it is simply time to decide which way to go.

Here's some pictures for a look at the wiring in case anyone sees something I've missed. Please forgive the dirty MO. I haven't had time to wash since the last snow.

Mirror removed

Wiring enters through the pivot

Backside of mirror housing without the painted cover.

Wiring harness on the back.

Can't get a good view of where these hook in.
GripperDon
DALE Great photos. Wow, I sure wish I could help.
Gonzo
Say how does the mirror come off? Maybe an 04 or 05 has it prewired.
GripperDon
Section GW of the service manual shows the connector within the mirror. It is covered in the rear defoster section. It identifies the two pins that are for the heaters of the morrors. I can't seem to copy it I only have the reader not the full Acrobat.
dklanecky1
Grip, is this what you were referring to?

Thanks, GRIP! Maybe you can help. I was looking at Muthco's Signal Mirror installation that was done for dklanecky1...
Mirror Install PDF...What guage wire do you think is used for the mirror heat? Looks pretty small to me, maybe 24? What's your opinion?

I took quite a bit of pressure to remove the mirror. But, it's not difficult. While the service manual and Muthco instructions show prying it off only with a screwdriver, I wouldn't recommend it as the only tool for fear of cracking the housing or mirror.

I tilted the mirror upward, by hand, as far as it would go. Used a screwdriver to pry out just enough to get my fingers under the edge. Then stood on the backside of the mirror (to the front of MO), got both sets of fingers underneath a pulled upward until it popped off.

Replacing it was a "snap." :D

Hope you find what I didn't.

You are so brave! I am just too chicken to do that.
GripperDon
dklanecky1 Yes that is what I was referring to. Maybe MODale can test those points and see if he has power.

Looking at the Muth Mirror install pdf, I am beginning to doubt the the wires are there already, even though it would make sense, at least to me, to have them prewired.

That Muth pdf complexity and total size of job, makes me feel that I will go the wireless route for the mirror turn signals as soon as they start to ship.
Gonzo
What are those two wires outside of the bundle for? The blue and purple ones?
GripperDon
The schematic calles the color code for heaterr wires, L/B and B. on page GW27 I think.

I doubt I'll have a chance this weekend. I'm refinishing wood floors. How fun! But, will try to check this soon. I e-mailed Chris @ Muthco for an update on mirror availability. He says they're hoping in a few weeks.
GripperDon
I just email The wireless guys, let you know theystill have been saying early Feb.
MO Dale
Finally! I took the driver's door panel off and checked the mirror wiring harness. Good news! It is prewired to that point.:claphead:

Now for the disclaimer...I have an '03 SL with leather and the memory seat, but no cold package. Does this mean the cloth seat models are wired? Well, taking off your door panel and checking is the only way to be sure. It's actually quite easy to do. It has been suspected by others that the wiring is there in all MO's. Zebelkhan even found a wiring harness for heated seats that he doesn't have. I'm gonna check that sometime soon, too.

Here are some pictures. I had a little trouble with holding wires and keeping the camera steady, but they came out pretty good.

Here's the top of the harness.

Better view of the 7 top wires to the mirror motors.

Nine wires at the bottom of harness.

Inside the connector.

See how the pretty light glows when I turn on the Rear Defroster!

Since there are no wires in the top connector, the pins from the bottom piece don't really plug into anything. I figure I'll just splice into the wires at the bottom of the harness to keep things simple.

So, what to do now...order Nissan replacement heated mirror glass and have a fairly quick install. Or, do a little extra work and get the cool Signal mirrors? One thing is for sure...I'm getting really tired of scraping frost and fogging mirrors!

Decisions. Decisions. Of course, we only have through the 28th for the Muthco Group Buy.
GripperDon
Nice work and nice pictures, GRIP :D
Gonzo
Fabulous pictures!

I think if you go with the signal mirror you will also have to run wires for the signal portion to work. If you just get the Nissan heated mirror than installation should be fairly straight forward.

How much does the Nissan heated mirror cost? I might be interested in making that mod. I have an 03 with cloth. I hope I'm prewired too.
zebelkhan
This maybe a dumb question but how did you power up the wire? If it was hot without having to switch anything on then the heater will be on all the time.
GripperDon
I think it is already "Switched" by the defrost switch. I think. GRIP :D

I guess that is the part I was not clear on as MO Dale's post does not mention turning anything on to get power.

I just turned the ignition to "On" and then turned on the Rear Defroster switch (checked twice). Wallah, it worked! I was so happy! :D

Actually, there's a text line right above the tester picture. "See how the pretty light glows when I turn on the Rear Defroster!"

I should have bolded the lines. They really don't show well.

[edit] I bolded them.
zebelkhan
See...I told you it was a dumb question...

I must be hard of "seeing" too....:o :o :o

Edit: Come to think of it, I do use vision correction stuff!!!!:2:

Nice work MO Dale!

Since what I really want is the signal mirrors, and heated mirrors are a secondary desire, I think I'll get the Muthcos. I'm sure I can find a couple appropriate terminators for the wires at Sandy's Electronics that will let me join right into the harness.

Don't be embarrassed. Looking back at it, I should have put text in that photo like I did the others. Then it would have been clear. I'll see if I can fix it tonight.

That'd be cool! Let us know what you find, as that would sure be a nicer way of doing the job.

I should post a picture of the side marker lights I bought. They didn't come with a harness and I haven't had much luck with my searching. Maybe someone would recognized what I need to look for.

I hope you find the wires, too! The mirrors are $90.68 for the pair. They claim $9.95 minimum shipping for most packages. So, just a bit over $100.

Nissan-Parts-Dealer.com

BTW - I followed Muthco's instructions for removing the door panel. They show using a screwdriver to lift out the window switch panel. I suggest working the screw driver in under the panel at the front part by the grab handle. I made the slighest dent where they show (maybe I wasn't in the exact spot). It's one of those "I'll always know, but nobody else will" things.

Also, start popping the panel loose from the sides toward the bottom. Then lift up to remove. The top has a lip that hangs over the sheetmetal. I like the way they did it. Makes for easy alignment and you don't have to worry about it falling while taking out the screws.

In your pictures....i saw your mirror to be different.....inside structure looks different....ill double check (print yur imange and take it with me)....maybe heatd mirror is not just the glass....but whole thing.....

Well, other than Muthco's pictures mostly showing the left mirror with wires for heat, and mine being of the right mirror, I don't see any difference with the mount. Here's a picture from Muthco's instructions. See the Gallery for my pics. Are you want to add heated mirrors, too?
Digital
Well i took apart both of my mirrors today and oddly enough they both are different. One side has heating wires as usual but pass side doesnt have any. Im wondering if heated means only drivers side. I bout my MO used so i have no clue what happend before i got hold of it, then again when I bought it had only 400 miles on it.....confusing....confusing....
GripperDon
You pose a interesting question.. Does anyone have experience that heat is on only one side. How about you frosty area residents? GRIP :D
samwlee
I'm pretty sure both mirrors are heated on my MO.. cleans the ice off really nice... :D
Digital
MO Dale,

My left mirror looks like your rigth one just like in pic above. It has those two heating wires but right side have no wires and white plate on right side is black. Maybe somebody did mess with it.
Digital
One possiblity might be that someone replaced the mirror from 03 MO in case they broke it somthing, maybe 04's have black plate. My last guess, they changed one of the side with either non heated or heated. I have heated seats so maybe original mirrors were heated and they added right side without the cold package ( that might explain the color) Maybe black is non heated and white is heated. Makes me curious

Definitely odd! It could have been replaced due to a mishap during shipping or on the dealers lot. I'd point that out to the dealer next time you're in for service and ask them to correct it. After all, if you have factory heated seats, you're supposed to have heated mirrors. You don't list any details about your MO. So, I assume you have leather, plus the package (Touring?) with the seat memory, HIDs, etc. That's what included the cold package on the '04s. The '03 models had the cold package totally separate. My plan is to add the package myself as money permits. The heated mirror wires exist in the door up to where the mirror harness connects. I just need to add the heated mirror glass and a few short lengths of wire and I'll be in business.

Zebelkhan, I took the top of my console apart and found the connectors for the heated seat switches. But, I haven't had any luck finding where the wire is tucked in under the seat. I'll keep looking.
Digital
Well whatever the story's behind whole thing I'm going to replace the whole mirror because I got a deal from one of this salvage yard. He's giving me one for $151 which are heated, electric and memory. He also has four more so if anyone else wanna grab them.
