Apologies in advance if this is an old symptom covered in other threads, but I've searched the forum to no avail.
The problem is noise; a whine, a hum very noticable at speeds over 30 mph and/or >1300 rpm.
My 03 Mo has about 21,000 miles on it, and has been an extremely quiet vehicle to drive.
Suddenly "THE NOISE" appeared, seemingly after my last maintenance visit to the dealer last week. The whine/hum is loud enough to be noticeable even over the radio being played at moderate volume.
My first thought was tire noise (did they rotate the tires and erroneously switch sides?!), but the boss said she thought it was the engine or transmission. Her hearing is better than mine- too much rock and roll and hunting!- but she's not exactly a car tech!
Could it be a bearing somewhere? The noise and it's volume seems to be somewhat, but not exactly, linked to speed and RPM. It seems more noticeable, for example, accelerating up a steep hill.
Does anyone have any ideas I can share with the service advisor? I'd hate to have my observation of the problem be so vague as to be easily dismissed.

| Initial diagnosis after tech listened to it is a bad wheel bearing. A bit surprising with such low mileage. |

Seems more than coincidence that the problem occured immediately after having the tires rotated. I suspect the wheels were over torqued using an impact wrench and ruined the bearing.
Those lug nuts are only supposed to be torqued to 80 ft/lbs. |

I doubt it if wheel nuts will have anything to do with the wheel bearings. Unless they performed an axle service, the bearing would not be affected.
In my experience tire noise can sound "and feel" like bearing noise. Unfortunately the only way to confirm is to once more rotate the tires, best if put back to their original locations. But I would have this done before you have "nissan Specialists" mess with other critical parts of your car. |
