Nikon D70 - Click HERE for Original Thread

I purely photograph for personal use, but was never satisfied with the quality I got from a compact digital camera. I found it too slow, over saturated and not very good at depth of field....Also the built in flash annoyed me with the shadows for those indoor shots....

So I bought a Nikon D70 digital SLR last week...I know they are cheaper in the US, but a real bargain at the moment in the UK with the rebates...

I can really recommend it if anyone is interested in being a little bit more creative....

Nice, I've been looking at those too. How does it compare to the more consumer grade 5 and 6 megapixel digital cameras?
dejongj
We've also got a Sony P100 5MP camera and the picture quality difference is beyond believe.
I've also made some comparisons to a friends Sony F828 which is an 8MP consumer camera. It produces great pictures, but nothing like my digital SLR.
I always thought that MP made a difference, now I have seen the quality of this Nikon I know that this is just not the case. The lens is very, very important...Also the Nikon starts up instantly and when the subject moves, you don't get any of those digital blurry pictures...This camera is seriously fast.

If you like I can send you a full resolution picture that comes from this camera. I tend to shoot in RAW format, not JPEG, as it acts like a true digital negative...

I don't pretend to know everything about this subject, but as it is 'only' a 6MP camera I now know that MP don't mean much unless you don't frame your photo right and need to crop a lot...

A real difference is the ability to use proper speedlights...I got myself two of which one I run in slave mode....Absolutely brilliant for indoor shots. I can make portraits without those nasty shadows you get with the compact camera's....And I don't consider myself a good photographer....

I have a Minolta Maxxum 7000i for years and love it. We got a dig camera last year and upgraded this year to a Sony 7.2 MP P150, good size camera.

What I like about the dig it I find I take more pictures due to the convieinance but I still prefer my 35MM camera. The flash is more power (and can bounce), the zoom is more powerful (and I love getting face pitures from a distance) there isn't any time delay like most dig cameras under $1000 and the quality is great.

I like the 7.2 mp since I crop alot and still use it for quick stuff but when I when I have a "serious" event or a room where I know I'll need more flash power and zoom power I used my SLR.

i will strongly recomment Fuji FinePix S5100 -- 4MP 10x Optical.....

one great camera with amazing results.....
i had canon rebel as my SLR, but this semi-SLR is not bad at all....
check out some results....

MERGED -- with my next post

yea, i noticed that too....
just gimee some time and i will post the original images....

Ok, here they are in full resolution....

Looks like it makes really hard edges on light/dark transitions, or is that from the level of compression you're doing on those JPEGs?

Hmm looks like those mountains have been added at a later time...

It may be a setting you've used, but there is no depth of field, the image is flat...

Nice definition and detail though...

Have the same camera, love it. State of art
in its time. I doubt if there are any digitals that match the capabilities.

I have been considering Olympus c-770 or Panasonic Z20.

Or a digital back, if they ever make one, for my 7000i.

With digital, a technical artist with PhotoShop can make a great camera look bad and a mediocre camera look great.

The mountains have been "sharpened" too much either in Camera or in PS.

IMO sharpening is a neat tool.
I do follow this guidline tho, If god made it (Mountains, people, etc) it doesn't need sharpening.
If it is man made (Buildings, bridges, etc) it might look better with some sharpening.

As Djonjg has pointed out, there are pixels, and there are pixels.
Not all pixels are created equal.
I have an old Sony Professional D770 that takes great pix and holds together very well when printing up to 4x6", and at 5x7" starts to muddle a bit. (Very subject dependent. Does a pretty good portrait but not so hot on a "busy" subject for instance at 5x7)
Of course it cannot do 8x10 at all.
But then again, this Professional Camera has only 1.4 MP!

BTW, several pictures on the cover of the New Life Mag have been done with D70s.
Very impressive camera.

Film is dead for the masses and it is dieing in the professional ranks as well.

True, you can't stop technology march !

There were days I could easily tell digi-print with film-print, now I can't.

Not sure if digital pics have gotten better, or my eyes are getting worst :( .

That is why I am totally converted now I have gone digital SLR...A good quality lens does make a big difference on digital as well...

If I am correct, we haven't been able to defeat physics yet and you just can't get the same quality in a compact camera...

I'll do some proper shooting when I take the Murano to Lake Garda, Italy in June...Especially on the Isle of Murano near Venice :D

Film does have it's place, but it's shrinking pretty fast, even in pro circles. I shoot Fuji Velvia slides, usually 50ASA, with my Nikon F80 and the color is so rich and poster sized 30x20" blowups to hang on the wall look so good...you just can't do that even with a top of the line 12 Megapixel digital.

That being said, half of what I shoot is motorsports stuff for the magazine I write for, and EVERYBODY uses digital in that arena. At the last event I went to I had a dedicated photographer to back me up and his Cannon 8Meg SLR was freaking incredible, shooting off 30fps bursts when cars hit walls and that kinda stuff... He shot several gigs of pics, and had them burned to a DVD and off to the editor the next day, while it took me two weeks to get my slides back from the lab and then run them through my scanner and send them off...so much more efficent to go digital, and certainly good enough for 8.5x11 magazine work let alone consumer grade uses.

MightyMo,

I have Canon EOS 10D, a digital SLR with 6.3 M pixels. I print 13" x 19" borderless for myself on my Canon i9900 printer. The quality is beyond what I used to get from chemical process.

I always shoot RAW and use C1 for conversion to 16 bit TIF. So no loss in quality. Also I use Adobe color space as opposite to sRGB.
For “normal” viewing (monitor and web) I convert to sRGB and JPEG (without compression). I still cannot get over the unbelievable quality. Oh, I do use quality lenses (no “prosumers” here!), all L professional glass.

As others mentioned there is no comparison between P&S and DSLR. It is in a completely different league. For many reasons: larger pixel size, larger sensor, dynamic range, and of course GLASS. But you know it already.

I have been waiting for two things, FOVEON chip in SLRs (Like Cannon or Nikon), I know Sigma S-10 has it but when is it going to be common.

Second, a digital back for our regular SLRs so I don't have to re-spend thousands on lenses all over again.
dejongj
Remember that the majority of lenses can just as easily be used with a digital SLR. Actually there is only a handful of digital only lenses...

And some of your 'old' glass is like gold-dust now and us digital SLR users happily snap them up on eBay ;-)
Kris
"digital lenses" – the term might be confusing for some. Actually these are cheap lenses designed specifically for SLR with APS size sensors – like current Canon EOS 10D, 20D, Nikon D70 and others. The lenses are cheaper and smaller. I never buy them as they will not work on cameras with full size sensors or film cameras. I always buy professional quality glass designed for full frame cameras.

Now, I am not saying that the “digital” lenses are bad. For most people out there they are more than good and will definitely satisfy their needs. I simply invest in lenses that will outlast the camera. I know I will upgrade camera body in a couple of years and it will most likely be a full frame sensor camera. So I collect lenses in appropriate way.

MightyMO, try new Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II, 16.7 MP! My dream camera. It outperforms any film. It’s been proven.
MightyMo
I'll take the Nikon D2X while we're dreaming, 12 Megapixel and I can use all my Nikkor ED glass with it. :D

Until that (or a D70) happens, I recently picked up a Nikon Coolscan V ED, and WOW is that thing incredible. Check this piece of yummy goodness out: coolscantest.jpg
Kris
Nice job! I mean nice pic and a good scanner.

For me I will stay with DSLR. EOS 10D is OK for now.

I know the EOS 1Ds Mark II is a dream but what is wrong with dreams? Some day they may even become reality.....you never know....
