Finally figured the poll option out!
I am interested what everyones answer will be.
My MO is my very first SUV & it's great!
I know I can't go 4 wheelin like I used to do in my friends V8 Golden Eagle Jeep, but then I'm not 18 anymore either. |

I voted 2nd - although if I could count a Jeep CJ-7 - it'd be the 3rd.
Isn't really an SUV - but it isn't a truck or a car.
Jeep CJ-7 - which I'm thinking of getting another.
GMC Typhoon
Nissan Murano |

| Hey KS, what about a NONE option? Other than the Murano, I've never owned an SUV. :p |
|

| This is my first one, and I don't really consider it to be an SUV in the traditional sense. I bought the Murano for the AWD, the room, the speed, and the fuel economy compared to the competition. I love the Murano because I needed an SUV, but it is not a 4WD box on wheels that guzzles gas and weighs 5000+ pounds. |

OGz - The MO is also my first, thus the one answer!:D

Yeah, I miss my Jeep (and the places I could go with it). I had an '87 Cherokee and an '01 Cherokee. Unlike a lot of other people, I went offroading regularily. Thinking about getting a YJ as a second vehicle. |

Is the MO considered an SUV? We haven't figured out what it actually is!! LOL. I would have to say, this would be my first bc I hate SUVs. I think they are dangerous (ford + bad tires = death) IMHO and I hate SUV drivers....they drive me insane! I think some people drive these huge machines and really don't have any concept or clue on driving.
Anyway, that is my humble opinion on that subject!!
So this would be my first...but I don't really consider it an SUV, it's much more managable than a huge beastie!! |

Tyler_Canada, I still try to take my '90 XJ off road as often as I can but it seems to becoming less than more often now a days.

Yes, definately. And every time I see a muddy/rocky/snowy trail I think... "If only I had my Jeep with me..." |

I'm with Nicole. This is my first. I've resisted a long time because there wasn't an SUV out there to suit my needs. In fact, most SUV's in my area (Washington, D.C.) don't fit the needs of their drivers. I see a TON of extra large SUV's (think H2, Expedition) with only a single driver - and certainly none that take their SUV's off-road or other heavy-duty applications for which the vehicles are designed. But I digress... What I really needed was something that would meet the following criteria:
1. do well in inclement weather
2. have room for the wife, son and two dogs
3. have some luxury (did my share of "base" models in my youth)
4. have good gas milage (at least 20 mpg)
5. have good road manners, but not drive like a Cadillac
6. be rated to tow at least class II (3,500 pounds)
7. look sharp
8. cost $35K or less (had to fudge a bit on this one).
9. not be a rollover deathtrap on public roads like a lot of other SUV's (cough "Ford" cough).
10. be capable of "light" off-road duty.
For the longest time, that need was filled with the Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan that we have (except the off-road stuff). I had no problems whatsoever being seen in it or driving that great vehicle. I'm pretty secure with myself not to sweat an "image" issue with minivans. Love 'em. But we needed to replace my aging 94 Camaro since I coudn't keep taking the minivan all the time and leaving my wife stranded in the winter. The Murano is the only vehicle that came close to meeting all the criteria (had to spend a bit over $35K), so it won out. Two minivans would have been overkill. |

Wow - lots of people with Jeeps.
I really miss selling mine. I traded it in on the Typhoon because it didn't make sense for a single guy to have 2 cars :) I REALLY miss it.
If I can talk my wife into it - the Murano's replacement will be a new Wrangler. I'd rather have a CJ - but she won't go for that as a daily driver. At least the new ones are a little more refined. |

89 Pathfinder (with some Phoenix Gold pieces, a Rancho suspension lift and BFG ATs on ARE rims {sigh} -- I sure miss it)
99.5 Pathfinder -- the 89's replacement.

It all started with a '91 Pathfinder (LOVED that one). Then we moved from CA to MI and were concerned about driving an import nameplate (plus it was only 2WD), so we sold it and got a '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Biggest mistake of my life - the only thing positive I can say about it is that it handled the winter roads very well. Other than that, it was too small, too noisy, and cheaply made.
I got rid of the Jeep and went with a '97 Expedition. I still have it and love it almost as much as my Pathfinder. Now I've added the Murano to the "fleet" and it handles the daily driver chores when my summer car is in storage. |

I'm amazed at the number of people who refuse to classify the MO as an SUV. Granted it's not a huge truck like a suburban or expidition, but then again it certainly isn't a car.
I was looking at the Volvo V70R (wagon). That is a very large car, lots of room, etc. When testing driving, we took the V70 home as part of the drive and pulled it into our driveway. Seemed like a VERY big car compared to my Del Sol and my wife's Prizm. But still definitely a car.
We did the same thing with the MO. Now, we had just test driven a lot of different SUVs (Highlander, Pilot, Pacifica <gag>, MDX, Tourag, etc) so the MO seemed quite small. But when we pulled it into our driveway we could definitely tell that this was an SUV.
So people usually call it a cross-over. I don't. I consider a cross-over to be something more like a Subaru Forrester or a Toyota Rav 4. Something that has some of the abilities of an SUV, but is still a car. There are only two things that are NOT truely SUV-like in the MO:
1) Off-road ability (although there are a lot of SUVs that don't do well off-road anyway)
2) Handling (MO handles very well for as large as it is).
Still, I definitely consider the MO to be an SUV, albeit a good compromise for someone like myself who hates the standard SUV concept.
Of course, I also don't consider the excursion or suburban to be SUVs either. I consider those more of a BUS (or maybe just a "truck" in the generic sense). Really, is there ANYTHING sporty about them? Remember, the S stands for SPORT...
<ok, I'll now stop my venting and go back to sitting on the bench waiting for the 2005 to come out> :creeplook

MO is a SUV for sure. It is sporty and you can use it to haul stuff around and it is a vehicle. Off road use? You get a Jeep or a Land Rover for that!
MO is #3 for me
2004 MO
2001 4-Runner
1997 CR-V (Not really a SUV because there is nothing sporty about it!) |

SUV's two. If you count how many vehicles you drove off road, like SUV's, I've done that with all of them. Including a rental car in SoCal. I remember going into the off-road section of Mulholland (sp?) Drive and a guy with a jacked up 4x4 with huge wheels saying "I wouldn't take that in there!". Had to go slowly in a couple of spots, but otherwise it was a breeze. The rental guys were scratching their heads about the mud on the car. :)
How many people with SUV's on the road actually take them off the road? Very little....
That's why the Murano's so perfect. There's things we like about SUV's that it has, and things we like about cars that it has.
The perfect mix. |

Is the Murano an SUV?
Ofcourse it is, its the perfect SUV and that is why we all have one.
Sport = It sure is sporty, what an engine!
Utility = Just drove home from the cabin, 3 adults, one 7 foot Christmas tree pulling a boat.
Vehicle = yes it is that also
This is my second, 1st was an 88 Blazer, not much sport in her, but lots of utility. |

| 88 Blazer... Cool, I had an 88 Jimmy. Other than the two transmissions and one engine (broken crankshaft) it was great... |

My last SUV was a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4x4.
Although it was loaded it was not a stranger to offroading. Within a month of buying it we were out in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and found ourselves crossing a large "puddle" and having the bow wave flowing onto the hood!! It turns out the puddle was about 2 1/2 feet deep. The Jeep handled it without any problems.
When dropped into low range the V8's torque felt like it could drive up a wall if the traction was available. The x-fer case and tranny were bullet proof. |
